Military students plan on returning to their base

Military students at the college plan on returning to their base after their graduation. Ashley Morera, Criminal Justice, ‘17 and Tanajiah Brown, Psychology, ‘17 plan on returning back to the marines once they finish college. Each individual explained that being in the Marines is not just a duty, it is a way of life for them. “I was attracted by the structure of discipline and the image they portrayed which was strong and loyal,” said Morera. Senior ball ticket winners

The senior ball will occur Friday, May 8 with over 80 students attending, thanks particularly to three students. Seniors Carla Martinez, Alesandria DeSapio, and Ireyah Stevens were the top ticket sellers and winners of the Red Dog Tavern Lunch. When tickets sales were low, Dr. Nicole Yanoso, senior class advisor and history teacher, announced that the top three ticket seller would receive a free lunch at the Red Dog Tavern. Help a child, share a smile

Jonadad Fequiere Community Assistants teamed up for “Help a Child, Share a Smile” in the cafeteria April 30 Shantel Lindsay, sociology and business ’17, Sumary Solis, art ’18, Greiliz Quezada, justice studies and psychology ’18, and Jerusha Fils-Aime, psychology ’17, hosted this program to create cards for children and make their day. “The point of the program was to encourage everyone to be nice and make cards for children and they would get candy in return,” Linday said. An opportunity to learn a new language will be on Thursday, May 7 in O'Connor Hall’s basement from 8 to 10 pm. “I am hosting a mix and mingle event for students, to experience a night of language and cultural exchange from students who are fluent in different languages,” Eimi Ochai, ’18 computer science, and international student from Japan. Four students inducted in English Honors society

Jessica Nuñez The Sigma Tau Delta English International Honor Society inducted four new members into their organization on Thursday April 28 in O’Connor Parlor. Sister Florence,’16, Katie Flemmings, ‘16, Amy Hernandez, and Jessica Nunez, ‘17 gave an oath declaring their honesty and dedication to the program. Maria Capozzoli Student volunteers are needed for this year’s Baccalaureaute Mass and Commencement on Friday, May 15 and Saturday, May 16. Students must be available from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, and 7:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Student speakers Marrissa Gioffree, global studies and history ‘17, Hayyat Muheisen psychology ’17, Cristina Mendoza, art ’17, and Kimberland Land, early and elementary education ’17, hoped that those who attended not only learned about hunger, but also learned what they can do about it. Community assistant hosts mental illness awareness event

Jonadad Fequiere Founders Hall community assistant Nelly Nkengfack will be hosting an event for Mental Illness Awareness 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on May 5 in Upper Founders Lounge. This event will inform residents and address issues surrounding mental illness. There will be a guest speaker, Rob Nicholson, M.D., a representative from the National Alliance on Mental Illness, NAMI. Battle of the dorms

Jonadad Fequiere O’Connor Hall was declared winner of the Battle of the Halls on Monday. Battle of the Halls, a four day competition between Founders and O’Connor Hall, started on Thursday continuing through the weekend. This year’s Battle kicked off with ‘Budgetnista’ an informative event to teach students how to budget their lives during and after college. EOF senior luncheon

Dominique Schultz The Education Opportunity Fund program at the College conducted their senior luncheon on 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. April 22nd in Ward Dining hall. The luncheon was held to celebrate the seniors in the program who will be graduating and present them with academic achievement awards. The luncheon began with the director of the EOF department, Cliff Woodward, addressing the explaining the importance of EOF and how the program has helped each all of its students become the strong women they are today.
