“Engineering, to me, is the ability to turn ideas, challenges and hope into meaningful impact. It combines innovation, creativity and problem-solving to improve lives, strengthen communities and shape the future.” - Kimario T. Daniel Fawkes, Engineering Class of 2026

After graduation, Kimario plans to continue advancing in executive technology leadership, enterprise transformation and strategic leadership roles focused on organizational modernization and digital transformation.

At U of I, Kimario’s most valuable hands-on experience was his master’s research project, where he examined governance evolution in complex public-sector technology programs. The experience allowed him to apply classroom concepts to real-world enterprise IT and leadership environments while managing large-scale initiatives.

As a working professional, Kimario completed his graduate program while working full-time, an experience that reinforced the importance of flexibility and support for professionals pursuing graduate education.

Congrats, Kimario!

Reducing global crop losses with innovative data technologies and AI!

Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering Daniel J Robertson, PhD, PE has been awarded a $6 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to develop new data collection technologies and AI models to breed stronger, higher-yielding cereal crops.

The research aims to reduce harvest losses that disrupt the global food supply and cost farmers billions of dollars each year.

The four-year NSF Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) award will bring together artificial intelligence experts, engineers, plant biologists and geneticists from University of Idaho, Clemson University and University of Nebraska Medical Center to improve the predictive science behind breeding crops such as wheat, corn and sorghum.

The research addresses one of agriculture's persistent challenges, the bending or breaking of plant stems before harvest, known as stalk lodging.

According to Bayer Crop Science, stalk lodging causes an estimated 5% to 25% of cereal crops to be lost worldwide each year. When plants fall over because of high winds or other environmental stressors, they become more vulnerable to pests and disease and often cannot be harvested, impacting farming operations and reducing food production and crop quality.

The project focuses on the genome-to-phenome bottleneck in crop breeding. Plant breeders can identify millions of genetic markers in a crop’s DNA through laboratory testing. Collecting field data is more difficult because each plant has to be grown and physically measured in the field. The data imbalance makes it difficult to determine which genes influence valuable traits such as stalk strength.

Researchers at U of I are leading the development of harvest-integrated sensing technologies to measure the physical characteristics of plants. Data captured will be used to train AI models on the DNA sequences of plants to reduce variables and identify the genetic regions that influence lodging resistance.

What does it take to keep the lights on for an entire region?

A team of Vandal engineers is building a computer simulation game that puts players in the role of a regional electric utility operator. Players make decisions about resources, finances, and power generation while balancing economic, financial, and environmental outcomes.

The goal? Keep the lights on, avoid bankruptcy, and make decisions that shape the results of the simulation.

Built with roughly 15,000 lines of code by Computer Science student Hayden Grizzle and Todd Carter, master’s Computer Science students Devon Bryce, with faculty advisors Professor Terence Soule and Energy Institute Executive Director John Kumm, the project challenges students to solve complex software problems.

The team recently presented their work at the Idaho Conference on Undergraduate Research (ICUR). While the simulation isn’t publicly available on Steam yet, the long-term goal is to reach 1,000 concurrent players.

The game will be used in classes like Energy in the Modern World this spring, part of U of I’s Energy Literacy Certificate. "To me, engineering means using my skills and abilities to design solutions that improve people's lives." — Alex Stella, Mechanical Engineering Class of 2026

After graduation, Alex completed an internship with Advanced Input Solutions in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, before beginning a master's degree in mechanical engineering in the fall.

At U of I, Alex gained valuable hands-on experience in the Assistive Robotics Laboratory, where he designed and tested wearable exoskeletons for stroke rehabilitation. His work allowed him to apply his engineering skills to developing technology designed to improve people's lives.

Alex also received a semiconductor scholarship that supported his certificate in robotics engineering. The scholarship allowed him to focus his education on a field he finds both interesting and applicable.

Congrats, Alex!

“To me, engineering is about understanding how things work and applying that to problems that actually matter in health, the environment and energy.” - Towfeeq Robi, Chemical and Biological Engineering Class of 2026

After graduation, Towfeeq plans to gain industry experience before eventually pursuing a PhD.

At U of I, Towfeeq gained valuable research experience in Dr. Ching-An Peng’s lab, where he worked with thermo-responsive biomaterials designed to release human mesenchymal stem cells through cooling. He also contributed to a published paper on plasma-based water treatment with Dr. Sarah Wu and presented his research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium.

As an international student from Bangladesh, Towfeeq said the close-knit community within the Chemical and Biological Engineering department helped make the transition to U of I feel smaller and more connected.

Congrats, Towfeeq!
