What if an AI model could learn from both existing biological knowledge and new patterns in data? 🧬

That’s the idea behind engGNN, a model developed by College of Science assistant professor Tiantian Yang and collaborators. It combines known biological relationships with relationships learned from data to help classify diseases and identify features that may be important.

Congratulations to the research team on their publication in Briefings in Bioinformatics!

Can AI help researchers understand the differences between cancer subtypes? 🔬

College of Science assistant professor Tiantian Yang led the development of TF-DWGNet, a model that brings together several types of molecular data to classify cancer subtypes. The model also helps researchers see which information influenced its results.

Congratulations to Yang and co-author Zhiqian Chen on their publication in NAR Genomics and Bioinformatics!

A big year for Vandal science! 🔬

During the university’s 2026 financial reporting year, College of Science faculty led research projects with nearly $18 million in awards. They also helped lead projects with more than $15 million in additional funding.

The nearly $18 million in faculty-led awards is the college’s second-highest annual total ever—and its highest in seven years. Congratulations to everyone who contributed!

What started as an undergraduate research project is now a published paper! 🎉

Congratulations to College of Science alumna Katie Theissen (B.S. mathematics, applied biology option ’25), whose Hill Research Fellowship project was recently published in Biological Invasions.

Working with professors Jennifer Johnson-Leung and Jim Nagler, Katie used watercraft traffic data to model how invasive quagga and zebra mussels could spread among Idaho waterways. The research could help agencies identify where monitoring and prevention efforts may have the greatest impact.

Katie is now putting her data skills to work as a data quality assistant at Kynetec.

Big ideas in photonics are getting much smaller. 🔬💡

Congratulations to University of Idaho physics faculty member Andreas Vasdekis and his colleagues on their new paper published in Nature Photonics.

The research introduces a chip-scale laser platform that can shape light across both space and time—capabilities that previously required complex, bulky optical equipment. This advance could support future innovations in microscopy, medical imaging, communications and ultrafast laser technologies.
