🖤 💛 The University of Idaho community continues to feel the weight of the tragic loss of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, X**a Kernodle and Ethan Chapin. We recognize that continuing legal proceedings surrounding their murders can bring renewed pain and emotional distress for the Vandal family, and we extend our thoughts to everyone who continues to grieve.

👉The latest development adds another delay: the hearing scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 15, in Bryan Kohberger’s effort to challenge his guilty plea has been vacated and will be rescheduled.

As this case continues to draw national attention, it’s important to distinguish established facts and legal procedure from the speculation and unsubstantiated claims that can proliferate online.

In a new report from A&E Crime + Investigation, Idaho Law Professor Jordan Gross, an expert in criminal law and procedure, explains the legal framework governing Kohberger’s post-conviction challenge — including why undoing a guilty plea after sentencing is a difficult legal undertaking, what a petitioner must prove and what could happen next.

At Idaho Law, we believe legal education serves an important public purpose: helping people understand the law, evaluate information critically and separate legal realities from online conjecture.

He says his lawyers pushed him into the deal that spared him the death penalty.

⚖️ Cutting through the noise with Idaho Law expertise.💛🖤

As Idaho voters consider ballot measures this November, understanding the legal implications matters. That’s where the expertise of University of Idaho College of Law faculty can make a difference.

In a new interview with the Idaho Capital Sun, Professor Richard Seamon brings his extensive knowledge of the Idaho Constitution and decades of legal scholarship to an important question about House Joint Resolution 6 (HJR 6), which would amend the state constitution to designate English as Idaho’s official language.

🇺🇸 English is already Idaho’s official language under a 2007 state law. So what would changing the constitution actually accomplish?

Professor Seamon explains that the answer isn’t entirely clear. The proposed amendment could raise questions about whether existing exceptions allowing other languages in certain government activities would remain in place — including circumstances involving education, public safety and other legal requirements.

His analysis illustrates why informed legal scholarship matters: helping Idahoans look beyond the campaign noise to understand the facts, the law and the practical implications of the choices before them.

🎉 A five-year high for Idaho Law! 🔥

We’re celebrating our Law Vandals and an outstanding set of preliminary results from the July 2026 Idaho State Bar NextGen exam.

86.4% of our Class of 2026 first-time test takers passed the exam, while 83.8% of all Idaho Law graduates who took the July exam passed — a five-year high for Idaho Law’s overall bar passage rate. ⚖️🖤💛

This achievement is especially meaningful because our graduates were the first in Idaho to face the brand-new NextGen bar exam. They prepared for the unknown, adapted to a new kind of exam and showed tremendous resilience along the way.

We are incredibly proud of the Class of 2026 and grateful to the faculty and staff who supported them throughout this journey. 👏

We also know that some graduates did not receive the news they were hoping for. They remain an important part of our Idaho Law family, and our Vandal Bar Success team will be reaching out individually to offer support, coaching and resources as they prepare for the next administration.

A bar exam result is an important moment, but it is not the final word on anyone’s ability to become an excellent lawyer. We believe in our graduates and look forward to seeing all that they accomplish next as they begin their journeys into the legal profession.

Congratulations, Law Vandals! 🎓⚖️

We are Idaho Law! Go Vandals! 🖤💛

🎉 Congratulations to Idaho’s State Public Defender office on its second anniversary! 👨‍⚖️

The University of Idaho College of Law recognizes State Public Defender Eric Fredericksen, the agency’s leadership team, attorneys, staff and contractors for their work building and strengthening Idaho’s statewide public defense system. ⚖️

Idaho Law values its partnership with the SPD and appreciates the agency’s support of our students through internships, externships, mentoring and career pathways in public service law. 🎓

In April 2026, Idaho Law Review hosted the symposium, “Justice for All: Systemic Transformation of Public Defense,” in Boise and via livestream for more than 230 attendees. The event examined the creation, operation and continuing evolution of Idaho’s statewide public defense system and highlighted its role as a national model for public defense reform.

Congratulations on this milestone, and thank you for your continued commitment to ensuring access to justice for Idahoans. 👏

⚖️ Putting legal education into practice - and being part of the conversation. 🎤
Recently, University of Idaho College of Law students and faculty participated in the Idaho Tribal Court State Court Forum, an annual gathering of representatives from Tribal, State and Federal courts and government agencies to discuss and address issues of common concern in the administration of justice.
This year’s Forum was hosted by The Coeur d'Alene Tribe, giving Idaho Law students a firsthand opportunity to engage with court leaders and share their own work.
Four Moscow students presented to the Forum about cases they have been working on, legal research projects, and summer employment experiences: Dosa Nappo (3L), Maggie Sowisdral (3L), Nora Fluetsch (3L) and Olivia Antone (2L). The students were joined by Tribal Law Clinic Director Professor Jessica Millward, Native American Law Program Director Julie Leavitt and Moscow student Ashley Cunningham (3L). Professor Jordan Gross, appointed by the Supreme Court of Idaho as the Academic Consultant to the Forum, also participated.
The Forum provides an important space for representatives of Idaho’s Tribal, State, and Federal justice systems to build understanding, cooperation and respectful working relationships.
👉Five federally-recognized Tribes are situated in Idaho:
• Coeur d’Alene Tribe
• Kootenai Tribe of Idaho
• Nez Perce Tribe
• Shoshone-Bannock Tribes
• Shoshone-Paiute Tribes
For Idaho Law, participation in this work is part of our land-grant mission to engage with communities across Idaho and prepare students to serve the people and legal systems of our state. Experiences like this allow our students to see firsthand how justice systems interact — and to contribute to that conversation while they are still in law school.
We are grateful to the tribal and state court leaders who welcomed our faculty and students and gave them the opportunity to learn, contribute and be part of this important process. 🖤💛⚖️
