🌟Meet this week’s MLML Student Spotlight! 🌟

Olivia Beaudoin (she/her) is a second-year master’s student in the Marine Science program at CSUMB/MLML, working in the Coastal Ecology Lab and Invertebrate Ecology Lab. Olivia is currently researching the geophysical drivers of Pismo clam population distributions along the California coastline.

Olivia received her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in Marine Science from Fairfield University, along with minors in Mathematics and Spanish. During her undergraduate career, she led multiple research projects, including studies on species richness of shelled invertebrates in Long Island Sound, interannual variability of hydrological conditions in a local lake, and cannibalistic behavior of fingerling Brook trout at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo.

Her current thesis work focuses on how geophysical habitat influences Pismo clam populations. In addition to her research, Olivia teaches statistics at CSUMB and mathematics at the X-Academy Math Circle at Cabrillo College. She is also a UROC mentor for four undergraduate researchers in the Haupt Lab and leads over 60 undergraduate volunteers in fieldwork. Outside of MLML, she serves as a Water Quality Specialist for the Town of Fairfield, CT, and is a certified diver.

Olivia has always been an advocate for climate justice and was drawn to marine science because it allows her to make a direct and immediate impact while pursuing her curiosity through applied marine ecology and conservation.

At MLML, Olivia has served as a Student Body Officer (CSUMB Representative) and works as a Front Desk Assistant.

In the future, Olivia plans to pursue a PhD in marine science and coastal ecology, with the goal of becoming a professor and leading her own research lab. 🌊

⭐️Student Spotlight⭐️

Meet Bruno Mattoili, a graduate student in the Ichthyology Lab at the Moss Landing Marine Labs!
Bruno is currently researching the effects of temperatrue on ammonium waste excretion rate and physiology of juvenile blue rockfish. 🐟

He got his bachelors degree in aquatic sciences at UC Santa Barbara, then worked on commercial fishing boats in the Bering Sea as a fisheries observer. Before starting at MLML, he was a scientific aid for California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Invertebrate Management Project processing spiny lobster and brown box crab fishery data. 🦞 🦀

He was inspired to be a marine scientist from frequent childhood visits to the Birch Aquarium, and marine science documentaries on the Discovery Channel (back when the programming was actually educational!)

After MLML, Bruno would like to return to fisheries management and help lead the charge in ensuring the sustainability of marine resources.

In addition to his research, Bruno is a Student Assistant at Marine Operations and is highly involved with commmunity involvemen, including the MLML Open House!

Want to learn more about the amazing student and faculty resarch happening at MLML? Come to the 2026 Open House on Saturday, April 25th!

⭐️ STUDENT SPOTLIGHT⭐️

Meet Kerri Johnson, a graduate student at MLML in the Ichthyology Lab and the CSUMB Video and Image Analysis Lab. 🐟
Her research focuses on the role of San Clemente Island as a defacto marine protected area by measuring the fish populations and community structure within two different zones with different levels of protection from human activity.

She is incredibly passionate about policy in conjunction with research and her work allows me to bridge the gap between the two disciplines in an exciting and interesting way!

She earned my bachelorette degrees from University of Rhode Island where she double-majored in Marine Biology and Wildlife and Conservation Biology. There, she conducted shark research for three years and volunteered at the Newport aquarium. After University, she lived on Nantucket Island where I worked at the Maria Mitchel Aquarium. While at MMA, she conducted invasive species monitoring and horseshoe crab monitoring. Afterwards, she moved down to Florida to conduct research on sea turtle nests. She realized that she really missed fish and decided to pursue her masters and specialize in ichthyology! After she completes her masters at MLML, Kerri plans to continue higher education and pursue a PhD in Australia!

Kerri is the MLML Open House 2026 Planning Coordinator and we are very grateful for all her amazing community AND research work!!

Come learn more about the research at MLML at the 2026 Open House in April!

Thank you .dj talking about your research!

🌟STUDENT SPOTLIGHT🌟

Meet Ailís Clifford, a graduate student here at MLML! Ailis is in the Ichthyology Lab at MLML and the Coastal Ecology Lab at CSUMB. For her masters thesis, she is investigating where juvenile purple sea urchins are distributed in the central California habitat and their potential predators!

She recieved her undergrad in Marine Biology and Ecology from the Universty of Miami. While there, she conducted research on the effect of nutrition on innate immune activity in cnidarians using the scarlet sea anemone, Nemotostella vectensis, as a model organism! During her final semester at UM, she studied abroad in the Galápagos Islands in Puerto Villamil. While there, she took on several smaller projects including s*x surveys of 5 native fish species, a behavior analysis on juvenile marine iguanas, and a benthic survey project looking for invasive species in conjunction with the Galápagos National Park!

Growing up, her mom would take her to Alki beach in Seattle to go tide-pooling which started her interest in marine science. In highschool, she joined her schools marine science club and started competing in marine science trivia. She competed at the Orca bowl and National Ocean Science bowl which made her redixcover her passion for marine biology and persue it for her undergrat and masters degree!

Ailís is hoping to persue a PhD after gradiating from MLML. One day, she would like to become a PI and take on graudyare students of her own, combining her love for marine science and teaching.

🌊 A new paper by Dr. Maxime Grand, MLML’s Chemical Oceanography professor, is now published on ScienceDirect: “A matrix-independent method for direct nanomolar dissolved aluminium analysis in seawater using programmable flow injection (pFI).”

Using programmable flow injection (pFI, depicted above), the study measures aluminium in seawater. An exciting step forward for understanding ocean biogeochemical processes and advancing chemical oceanography!
