What happens when research moves beyond academic journals?

For CMU accounting professor Philip 'Keejae' Hong, it can influence public policy, attract national media attention and help students see their discipline in a new way.

This spring, Hong received the College of Business Administration Research Award for scholarship that connects accounting research, business practice and student learning.

“Accounting is not a finished body of knowledge but a living, evolving discipline,” he said.

Most people don't associate Wall Street with a regional public university in the middle of Michigan.

But over the past decade, CMU students have built a remarkable track record of earning internships and careers at RBC Capital Markets and other leading financial firms.

That success can be traced back to the vision of alumni Jon and Terri Voigtman, whose scholarship support, industry connections and commitment to students helped create a pathway that continues to open doors today.

What's especially remarkable is how the pipeline sustains itself. Students become interns. Interns become analysts. Analysts become mentors. Then they help the next student navigate the same path.

What happens when curiosity turns into a career?

For Abu Amin, it started with a research project as an undergraduate student. The experience of asking a question, gathering data and contributing new knowledge sparked a passion that continues to shape his teaching and research today.

Now a finance professor at Central Michigan University, Amin explores questions related to corporate governance, accountability, sustainability and ethical decision-making. But what I found most interesting in our conversation was how closely he connects those ideas to student success.

"I want students to think critically about corporate behavior, governance, and accountability, the same questions that drive my research," he said.

His advice for students is refreshingly simple: Stay curious. Work hard. Be humble. Embrace AI, but remember that technology is only part of the equation.

As Amin puts it, "AI amplifies the person using it. Technology changes; good judgment and integrity do not."
