The Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 changed the course of history for everyone, including journalists.

The movement has shifted the way journalists talk, think, and report.

Michael Paul Williams stated, “There are conversations that are taking place in newsrooms and there’s a level of introspection that’s happening in newsrooms that I never would have imagined.”

In the nine months since George Floyd’s killing by a Minneapolis police officer sparked nationwide protests, Black Lives Matter has led to reforms and conversations in mainstream media newsrooms that were once unimaginable, according to a panel of Black Richmond journalists who spoke Thursday at a...

Check out this article that highlights the importance of journalists taking care of their own mental health.

We all have sat back and read an article that has brought us to tears, or even devastated us. Remember that behind that article was someone writing and researching it. Sometimes that gets overlooked.

Journalists are not ones to focus on their own mental health. They want to produce a good story, and inform their readers of any and all information.

This article will highlight different practices journalists can take to focus on themselves and their mental health while also remaining a professional.

Now more than ever, journalists need to make space for positive coping skills to process the difficult experiences and emotions that come with the job.

It's no doubt that women have changed the course of journalism.

Check out this article that highlights successful women journalists, and who some of their role models are as well. It's important to empower our women journalists and everything they do.

In celebration of Women's History Month, Solution Set is sharing lessons from some of the leading women working in journalism today.

Doug Berry is a former CMU faculty member and has been guest lecturing at CMU every spring and fall semester since the fall of 2013--excluding the first year of Covid. He also guest lectures at two other universities. He teaches anywhere from nine classes to fourteen classes each trip, including advertising, PR and journalism courses.

Before teaching in Mount Pleasant, Doug was an advertising executive in Detroit for thirty years. He wrote and/or helped produce $1.5 billion in national advertising, largely for Ford and General Motors.

He continues to come back for two reasons. "1. I love teaching CMU students. They listen, they think, and they ask interesting questions. They like to hear stories from the real world and that's what I bring into the classroom. 2. Selfishly, teaching is in my blood."

His lasting legacy is that he is the father of the CMU Advertising Major. He is proud all of his students who have spread their wings to places such as New York, Beijing, Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and more.

We are grateful to all that Doug has continued to give to our department!
