The picnic in September was canceled due to weather. So another student-appreciation event has been planned. Friday, Oct 28, 5-7 p.m. at Morey Courts Recreation Center .

Morey is well-stocked with equipment -- a multipurpose court ideal for casual games of basketball and soccer and also kid-sized basketball nets! Pizza and soda will be served.

Spouse, partner, kids, and family are welcome.

Wear sports/athletic shoes so the courts are not scratched.

The new academic year is about to start. This week, we highlight an exciting elective in the program:

ECO 626: Research in Economic History Post 1870.

This course is essentially a research methods class as much as it is a course in economic history. Students will read (generally) three journal articles each week which will be focused around some theme. On Friday mornings (the class meets once a week from 9 to 11:50 on Fridays) we’ll discuss and dissect these papers so that we can learn about what components good research papers have (research question, motivation, methodology, etc.).

Of course along the way, we’ll be learning about 20th century economic history with a large focus on the Great Depression—what were the causes, how did the government respond, how effective was the government response? You will also learn some applied econometrics via the examples we see in the papers.

Students will be expected to write an original research paper as a final assignment at the end of the semester.
