Just another Manic Monday... Well we don't know if Monday is actually Manic, but the professionals in the Counseling Psychology, Social Psychology and Counseling Department can do a clinical assessment to determine if Monday is actually manic. They bring many degree options for students to help people across the lifespan improve their mental health. Our department offers a PhD in Counseling Psychology and Master's degrees in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling, Social Psychology, and Social Psychology and Clinical Mental Health Counseling. They are the only department that doesn't have an undergraduate degree outright, but they do offer two undergraduate minors in Counseling and Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution. Many of the students in their graduate programs gain clinical experience in the COH Interprofessional Community Clinic's Counseling Practicum Clinic seeing patients for a variety of needs. You can learn more about these programs at bsu.edu/counselingpsychology

The Simulation Information Technology Center or SITC as we call them is one of the critical parts of training future healthcare professionals, not only in Nursing, but they work with others to create discipline specific simulations in speech pathology, athletic training, nutrition and dietetics, and medical Spanish classes. They've even branched out to include virtual simulation, which allows more complex conditions and nursing scenarios to play out and challenge students in critical decision making to treat their patients.
You won't see them much as they are behind the scenes making these simulations happen, but the team consists of Ben Armstrong, Allison Johnson, Becky Fights, Jane Milleman, Matthew Zeller, Dani Ely, Rachelle Fuller, and Britain Bryant. Charlie Cardinal is an honorary member of the SON team. You can read more about technology in simulation on our blog. https://blogs.bsu.edu/coh/2026/05/13/balancing-technology-and-tradition-in-nursing-education/

Its Major Monday, but on a Tuesday this week, because of the holiday. Today's feature is Nursing. Whether your career goals include working in a hospital after graduation, pursuing graduate studies to become a family nurse practitioner, or moving on to doctoral work, Ball State’s nursing major will put you on the road to success working in hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics, providers' offices, or home health care facilities.
Ball State nursing graduates have an annual pass rate of 94 to 100 percent (94% in 2024) on the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). Employers routinely tell us that our graduates are very well prepared for their profession.
Our nursing major students' successes are thanks to a blend of intense lecture material with practical clinical experience. You will work with high-fidelity simulators that create a real-life experience in our million-dollar campus labs. In addition, you'll get to apply your nursing skills in various clinical sites throughout east-central Indiana. If you want to learn more about the profession visit bsu.edu/nursing, or call to schedule a tour of our simulation facilities. 765-285-5571

Feature Friday has us hungry for NACHOS. Have you heard of the NACHO Lab? Well sadly it's not that kinda of Nacho, but stands for Nutrition and Cardiometabolic Health/Obesity. It is where Dr. Bryant Keirns, Assistant Professor of Nutrition & Dietetics, conducts his research with both undergraduate and graduate students. He was awarded an American Heart Association Institutional Enhancement Award this year. These awards are analogous to National Institute of Health’s R15 that focus on undergraduate research training. Dr. Keirns is teaming up with Dr. Bikram Sharma, Associate Professor of Biology for this project, which will allow College of Health majors to work alongside students in biology. Bryant said, “In our AHA project, we are studying whether gut health influences cardiovascular health in people with obesity, but no other risk factors (also called "metabolically healthy obesity").” The project will increase knowledge about this understudied group and will be driven by Ball State students. Our students will learn a variety of research skills ranging from ultrasound-based measurements of vascular health to basic cell culture. If you may qualify for this study, please reach out to Dr. Keirns. The photo with this post features from left to right, students Sarah Fruit, Morgan Higgins, and Dr. Bryant Keirns.

Today's a lesser known holiday, called Bike to Work Day. Would you ride a bike to work if you could? We wanted to share some tips on finding the correct bike helmet from the website, safekids.org.

Find the Right Fit for your Helmet

Make sure you or your child have the right size helmet and wear it every time when riding, skating or scooting. Your helmet should meet the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission's (CPSC) standards. A helmet should sit on top of the head in a level position, and should not rock forward, backward or side to side. The helmet straps must always be buckled, but not too tightly. Does your helmet pass the fit check? It should.

EYES check: Position the helmet on your head. Look up and you should see the bottom rim of the helmet. The rim should be one to two finger-widths above the eyebrows.

EARS check: Make sure the straps of the helmet form a "V" under your ears when buckled. The strap should be snug but comfortable.

MOUTH check: Open your mouth as wide as you can. Do you feel the helmet hug your head? If not, tighten those straps and make sure the buckle is flat against your skin.

Bike riding is a great way to get exercise for children and adults alike, but if you are going to ride, we suggest at minimum to wear a helmet, but the protective equipment more associated with skateboarders and rollerbladers, such as wrist guards, and pads for elbows, and knees can prevent bumps, bruises and scrapes in event of a fall on your bike too.

Today's Major Monday features Social Work . You may not know what Social Work is, but if you want a career focused on helping people across the lifespan—and you love solving problems, connecting with diverse people, and making the world a better place—then a career in social work is right for you. We have alumni working in a wide range of areas from children and families, community nonprofits, hospitals, nursing homes, and rehabilitation centers and more. The BSW degree is offered on campus, and online. Current licensing for social work does require a Master's degree, but we offer a fly non-stop track for our students.
