The Center for Autism Spectrum Disorder (CASD) was founded to produce meaningful answers to the questions that most challenge the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) community. By using rigorous research methods and addressing crucial gaps in services, our team seeks to serve those affected by ASD. We also seek to build the capacity of communities to meet the growing needs of individuals with ASD, thei

r families, and the professionals who work with them. Toward that end, we train graduate and undergraduate students to provide services in the context of applied research. We strive to generate innovative, time-efficient, cost-effective treatments that work, so that people with ASD can reach their full potential.

Dear Division Leaders,

We hope you will provide the following information to current undergraduate or early career members of your division or who you otherwise know who might be a good fit for the Student & Early Career Committee. Committee members in their third year will serve as committee co-chairs, so this is a great opportunity for burgeoning leaders!

Student & Early Career Committee Call for Applications

There is a wide range of challenges facing pre-service and early-career special education professionals. With the shortage of special education teachers and the radical changes in the past two years, the CEC Student and Early Career Committee (SECC) provides input to the Board of Directors on initiatives focused on recruiting, supporting, and retaining teacher candidates and teachers during their first few years in the classroom. CEC needs the voice and perspective of its student and early career members!

Two positions are open on the SECC for three-year terms beginning July 1, 2022:

One undergraduate (Must be an undergraduate for at least the first year on the committee).
One early career K-12 practitioner (in the field for three years or less)
Preview the application.

Applications are due 12:00 pm ET, May 16, 2022!

Questions: Contact Sharon Rodriguez, Director of Governance and Executive Services

The Biomechanics Laboratory at Ball State University is conducting a study about children and adolescents with Autism who have trouble walking. This study will focus on their gait performance or walking abilities which will help learn and prevent injury's from occurring.

Please see below for more information on this study:

PARTICIPANTS NEEDED

Clinical gait analysis for children and adolescents with ASD

This study is being conducted by Xinye Wu in the Biomechanics Laboratory at Ball State University under the supervision of Dr. Henry Wang.

Why
• Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) commonly face physical challenges, leading them to a high risk of falling during daily activities. Studying gait performance in children with ASD will help understand and prevent potential injury risks.

Who
• Children and adolescents with ASD (8 to17 years) will be recruited in this study.
• Exclusion: (1) Children and adolescents who were additionally diagnosed with Asperger's disorder or toe walking. (2) Individuals with neuromuscular diseases that affect gait movement. (3) Individuals who have hearing problems.

What
• Individuals will come to the laboratory for one time visit that will last approximately 2.5 hours.
• Sign an Informed Consent form and Health History Questionnaire.
• Have reflective markers placed on various bony landmarks with adhesive stickers.
• Complete several walking tasks on the treadmill at a normal walking pace while harnessed. Measure the subject’s leg strength.
• While walking, the motion capture cameras will be collecting your walking motion.

Subjects will receive compensation ($30 Tango gift card) for their participation. Outcomes of the study will help develop effective intervention programs for individuals with ASD to countermeasure the symptom.
