Dee oversees daily office operations to ensure efficiency and organization while managing financial processes such as budgeting, tracking expenses, and reconciling accounts. Additionally, she supports staff and leadership by coordinating administrative functions, monitoring budgets, and ensuring compliance with institutional policies.

-Why did you choose to work at Ball State?
I chose to work at Ball State University during a time when I was exploring a new career path and uncertain about my long-term direction. Starting as a temporary employee gave me the opportunity to experience the environment firsthand, and I quickly realized how much I enjoyed working in a school setting that Ball State provides. That experience ultimately led me to continue building my career in higher education, and I have now been employed for 13 years.

-What’s your favorite part of working here?
My favorite part of working at Ball State is the opportunity to interact with our international students. Having lived in Germany during my military service, I developed a strong interest in different cultures. Working at the Rinker Center for Global Affairs has allowed me to continue engaging with and learning from diverse cultural experiences.

-How has Ball State supported your professional development?
Ball State University has supported my professional development by giving me the opportunity to continue my education. As a first-generation college student, this support has been especially meaningful. Even at 65 years old, Ball State continues to encourage my growth, helping me develop both personally and professionally.

Thank you for all that you do, Dee! We’re so grateful to have you as part of the Cardinal family.

Our May Staff Spotlight might be a familiar face!
It's Krista Hayes, Assistant to the Dean and Office Manager.

Explain your job in a few words?
I keep the Dean’s Office running smoothly—supporting leadership, managing day‑to‑day operations, helping solve the occasional mystery, and making sure things stay organized (or at least organized‑ish).

How long have you been at CoH?
I’ve been at Ball State University for 10 years—a decade-whew!.

What’s your favorite part of working here?
The people. I genuinely enjoy working with a caring, collaborative group that supports one another and is committed to student success. The sense of community makes even the busiest days better.

What do you do in your free time?
I love to travel and spend time with my grandkids and my fur babies. Whether it’s a trip somewhere new, Disney or home in my garden, family time is my favorite way to recharge.

How long have you been at CoH?
I have been at BSU since 2007(!) and started when we were still in the AC building- so I’ve been with the CoH since its inception!

What do you love about working at Ball State?
I love working at Ball State because of the ‘small-school feel’ inside a big state school- I think we have the ability to provide fantastic opportunities for our students and am proud of the quality of speech-language pathologists that graduate from our program.

What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy running/ walking and being outdoors. One of my most favorite things to do in the summer is to go kayaking with my son and watch him catch (and release) turtles.

We’re excited to share Cardinal Spotting shout-outs, celebrating incredible people who bring our enduring value of Social Responsibility to life every day!

*Amanda Lee, Senior Assistant Registrar for Student Services
Amanda values everyone she meets and focuses on connection. Colleagues see this every day. She is often first to help others in need, both in and outside the office, and supports them through challenges. She also volunteers through her church and at Ball State whenever she can.

“She is a shining example of social responsibility.” – Katye Wormer

*Janet Shindler, Assistant Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship
Janet quietly encourages others and is quick to volunteer for events such as Homecoming, One Ball State Day, We Fly Fest, and graduation. She approaches her work as part of something larger, focused on the betterment of Ball State.

“She is a force of nature, providing positivity and encouragement wherever she goes.” – Sue Godfrey

*Marsha Andrews, Administrative Assistant for the CSH Dean’s Office
Marsha recently noticed a vending machine being mishandled and recognized potential safety risks based on incidents at other institutions. She contacted the Office of Risk Management and Safety, which appreciated the report and is exploring solutions.

“I would like to recognize her for going above and beyond in focusing on Social Responsibility.” – Susan Miller

*Dr. Nathan Hitchens, Associate Professor of Geography and Meteorology
Dr. Hitchens directs the Cardinal Weather Service (CWS), a student-led forecasting service for real-world clients and the foundation of Client-Based Forecasting. Although the course is only offered in fall and spring, he issued daily summer forecasts on a voluntary basis, benefiting the Muncie and Delaware County community.

“His work benefits the greater Muncie and Delaware County community by providing high-quality meteorological information during the summer months.” – Petra A. Zimmermann, PhD

*Dr. Jason Stanfield, Associate Professor of Accounting
Dr. Stanfield works with a class of students and goes above and beyond to help our community (from students to employees to Muncie residents) take advantage of the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program for free tax filing.

"It makes a huge difference in all of our lives to be able to send people uncertain about a tax issue or in financial distress to the VITA room during tax season."

I also love seeing how he mentors and develops the students enrolled in his class. - Amy Moudy

Join us in celebrating Amanda, Janet, Marsha, Dr. Hitchens, and Dr. Stanfield and the impact they make every day!

April’s Featured Flyer highlights Dr. Courtney Jarrett, Director of Disability Services within the Division of Student Affairs. Courtney oversees the university’s efforts to provide access and opportunity for students with disabilities. She reviews documentation, makes accommodation recommendations, trains faculty and staff, and consults on access issues across campus. Additionally, she is an Affiliate Faculty member in Women’s & Gender Studies, where she teaches a couple of classes each year, including an international course traveling to Japan for two weeks this summer.

-Why did you choose to work at Ball State?
I’m a triple alum of Ball State, and I love this place. When I came as an undergrad, I needed an on-campus job, so I was hired as a test proctor for students with disabilities at the BSU Learning Center. When I decided to go to grad school, I continued at the Learning Center as a graduate assistant, managing the Testing Desk and coordinating test proctors and accommodations. These roles helped me realize that I enjoy working with people with disabilities and could do that as a career.

As I worked on my doctorate, the Associate Director of Disability Services position opened, and I applied and was hired, beginning my professional staff career at BSU in 2009. I spent almost 10 years in that role before being hired as Director of Disability Services in 2018, which I still hold—now in my 17th year at BSU. I appreciated the mentoring and support I received as a student, and I now work here to give back so current students have that same support through my office.

-What’s your favorite part of working here?
The people are my favorite part of BSU. The students and staff in the DS office are phenomenal and make working there great. Students with disabilities have powerful BSU and career-related goals, and I enjoy getting to know them and supporting their access. I also appreciate the many faculty and staff across campus I collaborate with on access. There are only three of us as professional staff in DS serving 5,200 students, and we couldn’t meet their needs without collaborators across campus.

-What’s a project or moment here that makes you proud?
My favorite part of my job is attending Commencement and watching so many students I know cross the stage. It’s an accomplishment for every student to graduate, but it’s especially meaningful for many students with disabilities. I often meet them during pre-admission visits and hear stories of being discouraged from attending college or pursuing certain careers. They sometimes face unforeseen barriers at BSU that make their path longer or more challenging. I know they are capable, so celebrating with them at Commencement is fantastic—an excellent way to end each semester.

Thank you for all that you do, Courtney! We’re so grateful to have you as a part of the Cardinal community.
