RIP Hume.
[Loss of a Loyal Beta] It is with deep regret the Fraternity announces the passing of B. Hume Morris, Centre ’68. A longtime Beta lore enthusiast, Hume served as house corporation president, district chief, General Fraternity Historian, General Secretary (two terms) and General Fraternity President.
For his passionate love and service to Beta Theta Pi, the Fraternity honored Hume with its highest honor, the Oxford Cup, at the 161st General Convention in 2000. Widely admired by the undergraduates so inspired by his Beta Spirit, three chapters beyond his own bestowed him with membership on their chapter roll, including Epsilon Omicron Chapter at the University of Kentucky (1990), Delta Epsilon Chapter at the University of Puget Sound (1993) and Delta Pi Chapter at the University of Louisville (2002). An attorney by trade, his captivating speaking reached more than 100 college campuses across the continent, and hundreds upon thousands of Beta alumni and undergraduates attended General Conventions through the years and laid witness to Hume’s moving approach to telling the Beta story.
Recalling one of his favorite and often recited scriptures (Luke 12:48) that has long held deep meaning in Beta Theta Pi – “To whom much is given, of him much is expected.” – certainly Brother Morris worked tirelessly to repay a Great and Good Fraternity that gave him so much.
Morris is survived by his Beta Sweetheart Betty, daughter Mary, Beta sons Ben, Auburn ’88, and Hunter, Auburn ’00, and four beloved grandchildren. Longtime family friend and Administrative Office staff member Jonathan Brant, Miami ’75, and General Fraternity Archivist Zac Haines, Miami ’05, will represent the General Fraternity at his memorial service this Friday, March 30, at 10:00 a.m. at Anchorage Presbyterian Church in Louisville. Visitation is set for Thursday, March 29, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., and pink and blue flowers are being delivered on behalf of all Betas. May Brother Morris rest in peace as a grateful Fraternity honors his lifelong loyalty and dedication.
