A non-traditional student in MTSU’s University College, Daniel Hartmann returned to the classroom after nearly 20 years away, balancing family life and running his own business.

What started as an MTSU class project is now a published graphic novel exploring the realities of military trauma, PTSD and healing.

University College alumnus Andrew “Andy” Sosnick and his brother Jeremy recently released 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯, a black-and-white graphic novel inspired by Andy’s experiences as a U.S. Army veteran navigating life after service while pursuing his degree at Middle Tennessee State University.

Originally created as a final assignment in Dr. Jennifer Marchant’s “Graphic Novels as Literature” course, the project evolved into a fully published work focused on mental health, resilience and the importance of seeking support.

Andy credits faculty including Dr. Marchant, Dr. Sean Foley and Dr. Keri Carter with encouraging the project and helping create an environment where students felt comfortable sharing personal experiences through storytelling.

“We hope 𝘉𝘶𝘳𝘥𝘦𝘯 inspires those struggling in silence to know they don’t have to face everything alone,” Andy shared.

What started as a goal to finish his degree became a path toward photography, purpose and graduate study at Cornell.
