The Saluki Aces The Saluki Aces are proud to represent SIU in the all women’s Air Race Classic. The Air Race Classic follows a different route every year.

The race route is chosen to present challenges to the Racers, provide a variety of learning opportunities, yet be within the endurance range of the slowest airplanes. Racers will experience changes in terrain, weather, winds, and airspace as they fly 2,500+ miles over four days. In some races, the route has the flyby timing location at one airport, while the Stop for fuel, refreshments and possibl

e overnight stay is at another larger airport nearby. In 2015, Classic 32, The Saluki Aces, consisting of Jess Reed and SIUC graduate Stephanie Armstrong, won the Collegiate and Overall title for the Air Race Classic! You can find their story below:

The Aces received another 2nd place finish in the 47th annual ARC! 🏁❤️ We’re so proud of everyone, especially our other 2 teams. It truly was such an intense week! We were uncertain we’d even be able to make it to CO on Thursday morning, but all the stress paid off!

Thank you all so much for your support! We couldn’t have done it without you!

After an intense 4 day race, we made it to Loveland! Weather in the northern Midwest (Chicago -> Minnesota) made our decisions a little difficult, but ultimately taught us so much & we’re so happy to be here! We had some experience with VFR over the top and dodging T’storms after staying the night in Monee, trying to find less convective weather. We made it to Bartlesville, OK on our third day and spent the night. The last day we made it to Dodge City and to Loveland!

We’re also so happy to be rejoined with the other 2 SIU teams after being separated for the last 3 days.

In the final countdown for the start, & Grumpy cat is ready to race! It’s been nice starting at home, but the Aces are ready to start our journey to CO.

We’ve been having so much fun meeting the other girls & hanging out with the other two SIU teams, the Tall Tails & the Air Dawgs.

The Saluki Aces are racing again in the 2024 Air Race Classic! This year teammates Maya Marenda and Graci McDaniel will be competing for the team, representing SIU. Graci graduated in May 2023 and flight instructs at SIU Carbondale. Maya is currently working on her Commercial Certificate. We are so excited to keep the Aces tradition going as we travel from Carbondale (Go Dawgs!) to Loveland, CO.

The team is looking for your help to fundraise for hotels and food along the race, as they are not covered by the University.

With the race beginning in Carbondale this year, the community also has the opportunity to spectate and participate in events associated with the air race classic. More details will be posted as we make it closer to the start date in June!

We are so happy to announce we placed second amongst collegiate teams and second overall!!!
