Leveling the Playing Field: Strategic Equity Initiatives at Murray State University
Gender related beliefs and expectations for and by women in sciences have an impact on their ability to succeed. The impact of such beliefs and expectations at rural public universities has not been studied. The call to action of the Beyond Bias and Barriers report (2007) emphasizes that the time for addressing these factors has come, and the campus of Murray State University (MSU) provides a unique opportunity to examine how such factors may impact women.
Murray State University will adapt components of successful initiatives of ADVANCE programs at other institutions to address inequities in the hiring, retention, and advancement of female STEM faculty. Our Leveling the Playing Field initiative places primary emphasis on strategies to create a more equitable environment for female faculty in STEM and SBES in three problem areas identified through our ADVANCE Catalyst grant:
● Implicit bias in search, tenure, and promotion processes: MSU-LEARN strategies
● Retention and advancement of female faculty through the ranks: MSU-GROW strategies
