Long before she warned the world about pesticides in Silent Spring, Carson became a trailblazing female science writer who published popular articles and bestselling books about humanity's relationship with the ocean. This epic traces the arc of the 20th Century through the life of an avant-garde Hungarian architect who survives the Holocaust and immigrates to the US. A chance encounter with a wealthy American allows him to begin working as an architect again, but his increasingly complex relationship with his patron threatens to compromise his artistic vision—and takes this maximalist film to surprising and shocking places. Set over the course of a single day, La Cocina explores the inner workings of a Times Square restaurant at the turn of the millennium, where a stolen bag of cash complicates the secret romance between a Mexican line worker and an American waitress. This wildly inventive film is also a multilingual exploration of labor, language, and dreams-American or otherwise. Come see the fantastic southern gothic horror movie, Sinners, tonight Thursday (Feb 19) and Saturday (Feb 21). Both screenings will be hosted by students from HON 202. See what all the Oscar buzz is about!!! Below is a Sounds Good interview introducing the film, with student presenters Karley Yahl and Erwin Macario.

The 2025 film – which recently broke the record for the most Oscar nominations – is the next offering in Murray State University’s Cinema International screening series on campus, with two showings this week.
