A committee of MCC students planned and hosted a Disability Awareness Human Library event. The event involved many months of planning by multiple individuals and was a way for participants to spread awareness and positivity around disabilities. Presenters had the opportunity to share a bit about their perspective of living with a diagnosis. Attendees then had the opportunity to hear from presenters one-on-one or in small groups to learn more about their experiences navigating the workforce, educational settings, and healthcare systems with a disability.

The event was suggested by recent MCC graduate Isabella Buesing. Isabella wanted a way to: "help spread awareness for people with disabilities." The organizing committee hopes that through this and future events they can help to reduce the stigma surrounding disabilities. The committee hopes to host another event in the fall.

When students talk about the people who changed their lives, Lori Sheppeard's name comes up often.

As a psychology and sociology professor at Muscatine Community College, Lori has spent years supporting students through challenges both inside and outside the classroom. Whether it's a conversation in the hallway, encouragement during a difficult semester, or helping students connect with resources, her impact reaches far beyond a gradebook.

Recently recognized with both the Pay It Forward Award and the Starfish Award, Lori's story is also one of resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to helping others succeed.

Lori's dedication to our students and community extends far beyond the classroom. Through her leadership, advocacy for mental health awareness, support of student organizations, and countless acts of kindness, she has made a lasting difference in the lives of so many.

Even while facing her own battle with stage IV cancer, Lori continues to inspire others with her strength, compassion, and commitment to helping students succeed. From creating Room 50 as a space for mental wellness on campus to mentoring students through life's challenges, Lori exemplifies what it means to care for others.

We are proud to have Lori as part of the MCC family and grateful for the positive impact she makes every day.
