Dr. Ben Morris is doing the kind of creative work that brings national attention back to the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts.

A composer and jazz pianist, his work crosses genres and draws from a wide range of influences, including his Norwegian heritage. His debut album Pocket Guides earned multiple awards, and his music has been recognized through national commissions, grants, and performances at major venues, including the Newport Jazz Festival.

His work spans concert music, film, theatre, and opera, with collaborations across the country and internationally.

We are proud to have him as part of our faculty and of the work he is contributing to the field.

Congratulations to Dr. Ben Morris, the Micky Elliott College of Fine Arts recipient of the Scholarly and Creative Excellence Award.

Help us congratulate Dr. Morris on this well-deserved recognition

We’d like to introduce you to our first Dean’s Award recipient: Aza Showen

Aza is a senior music education major whose work as a flutist and leader has taken her to stages like TMEA and beyond—but what truly defines her is her resilience.

During her time at SFA, Aza faced a cancer diagnosis that could have easily slowed her down. Instead, she chose to keep going. Not by ignoring it—but by allowing it to shape her. Through that experience, she grew stronger, more focused and even more committed to her craft and her future.

Her journey is a reminder that strength doesn’t always look loud—but it leaves an impact. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when she spoke, and it’s easy to see why. She inspires all of us.

Next up, we celebrate Elias Nguyen

Elias is a pianist, composer and creative thinker whose work moves across disciplines—from award-winning compositions to film and sound installations. Their ability to tell stories through music, visuals and performance sets them apart in a powerful way.

Beyond their creative work, Elias is a dedicated teacher and leader, helping other students grow while continuing to push their own artistic boundaries. It’s a balance of curiosity and discipline that defines their journey.
