College of Western Idaho (CWI) has taken an important step toward establishing intercollegiate athletics by applying for membership in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

CWI sees athletics as an opportunity to help Idaho student-athletes pursue an affordable college education while continuing to compete close to home. Athletics could also bring students together, strengthen school pride, and build new traditions across the CWI community.

The NJCAA membership process will continue in the months ahead, with a decision expected in Spring 2027.

What happens when a local employer needs specialized training that doesn't already exist? You build it around the job.

When Eagle Oral Surgery & Implant Center needed specialized IV training for its Surgical Dental Assistants, CWI Workforce Development created a two-day course tailored to the clinic's workplace needs.

Through instruction and hands-on practice at CWI's Canyon County Center, all four participants successfully completed three consecutive IV starts — gaining skills they can put to work.

This fall, 450 new CWI apprentices are getting to work in Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC.

They’re learning in the classroom while gaining required experience on the job — all while working toward journeyman status and the next step in their careers.

CWI teams have also made it easier for apprentices to get started and stay on track, with changes to registration, courses and student support, plus opportunities to connect with employers through the Work-Based Learning Center.

More than 1,700 apprentices are expected to train with CWI this academic year.

Education and experience are helping Madison Miller shape her path forward.

After completing her first year at CWI, the Criminal Justice student spent her summer interning with Idaho State Police, gaining firsthand exposure to the work that supports law enforcement and the communities they serve.

With guidance from CWI faculty and support from the Work-Based Learning Center, Miller was able to take her learning into a professional setting, build connections, and explore career possibilities in criminal analysis.

Recruits in Class 8 of our Fire Service Technology program recently put some of their new skills and learning to the test during hands-on fire extinguisher training.

The training teaches recruits how to safely identify, select, and operate a portable fire extinguisher during the early stages of a small fire, giving them another opportunity to build skills they can use in real-world situations.

With a few weeks of training now under their belts, these recruits are continuing to build the knowledge and skills needed to respond to emergency situations and help those in their community.

Interested in turning a passion for helping others into a career? CWI’s Fire Service Technology program gives students the opportunity to build the knowledge and skills needed for the fire service through hands-on training, real-world scenarios, and problem-solving.
