Join us this Friday as we continue our Behind-the-Scenes series in partnership with Women for WineSense. We are thrilled to welcome Carmel Greenberg of Clos du Val to our Wine Education Center from 5:30 - 6:30 pm.
Carmel, the daughter of American immigrants to Israel, grew up in a small moshav near the Sea of Galilee, where wine was a part of her culture, but not drunk much for pleasure. It wasn’t until she began paying her sister visits during her military service that Carmel began to take an interest in wine at all. In fact, she studied Interior Design as her first degree. While studying, however, she took a job at Yoezer Bar Yain, a prominent French restaurant in Jaffa, where she was given a book of wine regions to pore over. This, along with tasting the many wines offered by Yoezer Bar Yain cemented Carmel’s love for wine and spurred her on to pursue a new career path. After graduation, she took a job at one of Tel Aviv’s major wine stores, where she led wine appreciation classes. After a while, Carmel realized that if she wanted to expand her wine education, she would need to travel abroad. She already had US Citizenship through her parents, so she decided to make the move to California, where she interned at Rosenblum Cellars for a harvest. She then enrolled in the Viticulture and Enology program at UC Davis. After graduating with her BS, she worked at Cakebread Cellars, Buccella Wines, and Dominus Estate before joining Clos du Val in 2021, where she still serves as winemaker. Carmel is known for her work with Cabernet Sauvignon, saying she didn’t choose to specialize in the varietal “it chose her!”
