We congratulate good friend of the Department, Dr. Alicia Okpareke, on her NSF grant! This is a first for North Central College! The grant focuses on "the national need to recruit, support, and train STEM teachers in science education and equity practices." North Central is better for having her as an inspiring teacher and respected campus leader. And now, both academia and practicing teachers will benefit from her knowledge and dedication to equity. Congratulations, Alicia!

ABSTRACT The project aims to serve the national need to recruit, support, and train STEM teachers in science education and equity practices. This training is locally critical as Illinois continues to experience teacher shortages in many STEM areas, while also seeking to increase representation of sc...

Statement from the North Central College Department of Political Science

The events at the Capitol on January 6, 2021 remind political scientists of their responsibility to use classrooms, research, and appropriate public venues to inform the public about the dangers of authoritarianism, demagoguery, and white supremacy. As a discipline and as civic educators, it is incumbent upon us to be honest about our historically exclusionary democracy, and to reiterate the pattern of state promoted violence against those who demand the basic rights and liberties promised in the Constitution. This insurrection demonstrates the dangerous consequences of mis- and disinformation by those in the highest levels of government, the privileges and protections afforded white supremacy, and the systemically unequal treatment of Black citizens by police. As a Department, our commitment to our students, the College, and our community is to continue to shine a light on our frayed democracy and its oppressive systems while working to dismantle those systems.
