To all students and faculty members submitting video files (within Canvas or elsewhere):
Many of you have expressed frustration with uploading video files to Canvas, VoiceThread, and other locations. There are two main problems with uploading video: The Wi-Fi connection can often be spotty, and the files are often very large. Many of you are often experiencing both problems at the same time, so solving both of these issues has been a main focus this semester.
Key technical information that will help to ensure success when uploading large files via Wi-Fi are documented below:
Wi-Fi:
IT identified two primary locations where students were having trouble uploading over Wi-Fi: The first-floor of Sylvia Trottier Hall, and at students’ homes.
The Rivier IT Department recently performed firmware upgrades on network equipment, which improved the overall network experience for our community. In addition, the Wi-Fi access points in Sylvia Trottier will be updated starting in January 2016. The newer access points will better support the number of students who are accessing the wireless network at the same time.
The Wi-Fi signal strength at your home can be limited by Internet Service Provider, number of users in your area, number of devices on Wi-Fi in your home, the age of your Wi-Fi router or computer, and many other factors. Canvas requires upload speed to be greater than 2 Megabits per second (Mbps). Directions on how to check your access speed from your location using speedtest.net can be found here: https://rivier.instructure.com/courses/1770200/files/77215919?module_item_id=20638137
File Size:
As a default setting, many cameras (ex: on an iPhone, etc.) record video in high-definition (HD). That means that a half-hour clinical assessment video can be 4.5 Gigabytes (GB) in size, too large to upload or email.
The best solution would be to record in lower-definition. Settings within Mac’s QuickTime, Windows Movie Maker, or the iOS app “MoviePro” can accomplish this lower-definition recording. A conversion program (such as Handbrake) can also be used to reduce the file size even more. Directions on how to record or convert video on a PC, Mac, or iOS device can be found here: https://rivier.instructure.com/courses/1770200/
In general, a smaller video file (~200 Megabytes [MB]) saved as an .mp4 file will provide the best results. These and other technology requirements can be found here: https://rivier.instructure.com/courses/1770200/files/77216085?module_item_id=20638244
Browsers:
Just a reminder – when uploading to Canvas, be sure you’re using the latest browser. Information on supported browsers can be found here: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-1284
