From Vanderbilt School of Engineering to NASCAR driver to Team Penske executive, Travis Geisler, BE’03, returned to Nashville this weekend for Sunday’s Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway.

In a recent profile by The Tennessean, Geisler reflected on the path that took him from the driver’s seat to vice president of NASCAR competition, where he helps lead many of the engineering and race-day operations that keep Team Penske’s cars running.

“Being on the competitive side is really important to me. That’s what I enjoy about racing. The driving part? I can do other things,” Geisler told The Tennessean.

The Vanderbilt Motorsports Team earned a 3rd Place finish in Efficiency out of 115 collegiate competitors at the Formula SAE competition held at the Michigan International Speedway, May 13-16. The 25-person Motorsports Team (12 of whom traveled to Michigan) worked throughout the year to build one of the competition's lightest cars, weighing in at just 343 lbs. — a feat that takes "constant effort in design and fabrication," said Phil Davis, the team's faculty advisor.

The annual Formula SAE event challenges undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, and test small formula-style vehicles.

Vanderbilt Motorsports Team President Sebastien Jacques, a rising senior majoring in mechanical engineering, said while the car didn't have its best day in the speed or endurance competitions, students are already tuning up for next year's race.

Welcome Ruogu Fang! A widely recognized researcher whose work advances brain-inspired artificial intelligence models and AI-empowered precision brain health, she will join Vanderbilt’s esteemed Department of Biomedical Engineering as the Flowers Family Dean’s Faculty Fellow in Engineering on August 16.

Fang comes to Vanderbilt from the University of Florida, where she served as an associate professor and Pruitt Family Endowed Faculty Fellow in the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Department of Biomedical Engineering. She is ranked among the top 1% of researchers worldwide in image analysis, according to ScholarGPS.

“Artificial intelligence is transforming the future of science, medicine, and human health, and Vanderbilt intends to help lead that transformation,” said Krish Roy, Bruce and Bridgitt Evans Dean of Engineering and University Distinguished Professor. “Professor Fang is a pioneering scientist whose work at the intersection of brain science and AI is expanding what’s possible in imaging, computation, and precision health. Her arrival strengthens Vanderbilt’s momentum in this rapidly evolving field and positions us to make an even greater global impact.”

Vanderbilt NeuroCline, a consortium of researchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center/Vanderbilt Health and Vanderbilt University, has received a prestigious award to explore using artificial intelligence to find new drug targets for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), the most common form of motor neuron disease (MND).

The Longitude Prize on ALS is a global challenge prize that rewards cutting edge AI-based approaches to transform drug discovery to treat ALS. Following a worldwide call to action in June 2025, almost 100 teams representing the world’s leading universities, technology giants, advanced medical research organizations and AI pioneers entered the prize.

Vanderbilt NeuroCline was among the 20 entrants recently selected to receive “Discovery Awards” based on their potential to use AI to identify and validate drug targets that aim to drive understanding of the disease and support future drug discovery.

Vanderbilt NeuroCline is a collaboration led by Veronique Belzil, director of the Vanderbilt ALS Research Center at VUMC/Vanderbilt Health, in partnership with Bennett Landman, director of the Vanderbilt Lab for Immersive AI Translation (VALIANT) at Vanderbilt University. Belzil is a leader in ALS genetics and translational biology, and Landman is an expert in large-scale AI and biomedical data systems. The team brings together complementary strengths in disease biology and advanced computational modeling.

A second cohort of U.S. Army Corps of Engineers leaders recently participated in a Vanderbilt University School of Engineering program to learn how to lead strategically with AI. The group met April 29-May 1, a few months after the first cohort in February.

The hands-on program addressed real-world case studies in disaster management, infrastructure resilience, and immediate practical application of AI in daily workflow.

Participants gave the program an overall satisfaction rate of more than 98 percent, and all of them said they would recommend the program to colleagues.

Special recognition to the program's instructors for world-class instruction that participants described as "breakthrough" learning.
