VPIL teams wrapped up the clinical year today, and students with Dr. Bo Lovvorn in the pediatric surgery clinic celebrated a great experience.

"As mentor in the Pediatric Surgery clinic, we have had four, 2-year teams comprised each of one medical, advanced practice nursing, pharmacy, & social work student. I’ve learned WAY more from the students than they from me! Thrilled to see this group off on their unique careers!" Lovvorn said.

Happy New Year! Today, our VPIL 2 students kicked off 2023 by immersing themselves in a health care insurance seminar and simulation led by Dr. John Graves, where students were able to act as “customers” and “insurers” who buy and sell insurance plans under different policy regimes in order to better understand the role health insurance plays in the US health system.

Thanks to Dr. Gruss for hosting our VPIL 1 students and faculty at his beautiful home in Nashville last Friday. The students spent time immersing themselves in conversation over dinner and beverages, building relationships that will benefit them as interprofessional teammates. Cheers to two years ahead in VPIL!

Do you remember your last visit with Mr. Atkins?

Last week, Vanderbilt Program in Interprofessional Learning (VPIL) teams wrapped up a longitudinal encounter with their fictional patient, Mr. Atkins.

Over the course of two years, teams work through prompts related to the patient’s health, addressing physical, mental, and emotional needs. Teams of medical, pharmacy, social work, counseling, and nursing students collaborate to find the best treatment plan based on recent histories.
