Vanderbilt Community Chorus

Vanderbilt Community Chorus The Vanderbilt Community Chorus (VCC) is comprised of adult singers from the greater Nashville area. Our programs are just as likely to showcase J.S.

We are composed of singers from all over the greater Nashville community. Some are affiliated with Vanderbilt University, some are not. We all share a love of singing as well as a thirst for the choral experience that we enjoy in a group of this size and ability. Bach as they are Stephen Sondheim, Jake Runestad or Moses Hogan. We rehearse Tuesdays from 7-9pm at Blair and typically perform two or t

hree concerts per season. New members are auditioned by the director in August and sometimes at other times of the year. While we usually perform on campus, we embarked upon our first-ever European tour to Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic in May of 2017 and plan to tour internationally on a regular basis. If you are interested in joining us, please contact the director, David Binns Williams, at [email protected] or call the Blair School of Music at 615-322-7651 to get more information.

Leaning into the energy of Bob Chilcott’s Sanctus in 7/8 time, rhythmic, driving, and incredibly satisfying to sing. Looking forward to sharing this live on May 2 at 3pm in Turner Hall at the Blair School of Music. Will you be there?

Today we celebrated a musical genre born on the soil of this continent and raised throughout times of struggle and resilience. A genre with equal parts enslavement and deliverance, exhaustion and perseverance, desperation and eternal hope.

The Negro spiritual became the lifeblood of enslaved peoples, a musical bond that lifted them during times when earthly struggles seemed relentless, and gave strength through the promise of ultimate release and deliverance from the pain of this life.

Today’s spiritual has expanded the definition of the traditional spiritual, and while it may incorporate Biblical texts and stories, it can also include modern themes of social justice, unity, and the universality of love, to name a few. Or it may salute those who championed freedom for those who seemed unlikely to ever find it, such as Harriet Tubman or Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This afternoon’s concert featured Spirituals written or arranged in the last 40 years for choir or for soloists, including a world premiere by one of our very own. We hope our performance conveyed with the utmost sincerity our respect of, and our love for, this genuinely American musical genre.
