Nashville Neighbor Project

Nashville Neighbor Project Graduate Project of Kyle Williams For my graduate project I am creating an online platform called The Nashville Neighbor Project.

As you may know I am currently a graduate student at the Nelson & Sue Andrews Institute for Civic Leadership at Lipscomb University. Simply put, the Nashville Neighbor Project will connect Nashvillians in need with people in their community looking to lend a helping hand. This online tool will combine elements of Craigslist, freecycle, listservs, and Time Banks to allow people in Nashville to inc

rease the visibility of their needs. Currently, I am partnering with Thriftsmart in the Tusculum neighborhood of South Nashville to pilot this program in their surrounding neighborhood. The folks at Thriftsmart feel a deep commitment to their neighborhood where many of their employees and approximately 75% of their customers live. They believe that The Nashville Neighbor Project will be a great way to serve the people that already look to Thriftsmart for many day-to-day needs. With your help we can set up a terminal on the floor of Thriftsmart that uses icons (to attempt to overcome a sizeable language barrier) to allow folks in the neighborhood to communicate a need they are experiencing, some quick details, and a phone number. This information will be communicated (via email notification) to several pre-selected groups in the neighborhood (faith-based communities and non-profits at first) whose time/resources/abilities/skills match those of the posted need. The ball is then in their court to meet the neighbor posting the need to work out a solution. In other words, The Nashville Neighbor Project is merely a means of connection. Ultimately, I hope to be able to implement this platform in neighborhoods across Nashville and maybe even beyond!
