Humanoid robots are getting a new gig as baggage handlers and cargo loaders at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport—part of a Japan Airlines experiment to address a human labor shortage as airport visitor numbers have surged in recent years.

The demonstration, set to launch in May 2026, could eventually test humanoid robots in a wide range of airport tasks, including cleaning aircraft cabins and possibly handling ground support equipment such as baggage carts, according to a Japan Airlines press release. The trials are scheduled to run until 2028, which suggests that travelers flying into or out of Tokyo may spot some of the robots at work.

The Financial Times reports (1) that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is overseeing creation of a 3D animated avatar of himself — with artificial intelligence trained on his voice, mannerisms and thinking.

The project team is feeding Zuckerberg's public statements and strategic views to his AI counterpart so employees will feel like they're interacting with him directly.

It's a novel approach to employee communications and feedback. But behind the novelty is something more consequential.

If companies can replicate leadership digitally, they can also rethink how work gets done and who gets paid to do it.

The non-AI economy—retailers, banks, manufacturers and others that still account for most rich-world jobs—are also hoping that AI could allow a single nerd to get more done. But many such firms employ few nerds, leaving plenty of demand for tech skills. From 2022 to 2025 the number of American computer and software workers grew by 12% in retail, 75% in property and nearly 100% in construction.
