International Education Week returns with a full slate of immersive activities to spur global awareness, curiosity, and engagement.

Organized by the Office of Study Abroad and Global Awareness (SAGA), this year’s program features new events that are both fun and thought-provoking, alongside favorites such as the IU Southeast International Photography Contest (submit a photo and vote for your People’s Choice favorite).

Monday, November 13:
Study Abroad Experience Panel Discussion, noon to 1 p.m., Hoosier Room.
International music videos – Bollywood, noon to 1 p.m., The Commons.
International film lunch – Spanish film, Piggy, 12:30 p.m.-2 p.m., The Language lab KV236.

Tuesday, November 14:
Foreign language calligraphy, noon to 1 p.m., The Hub.
International music videos – Kpop, noon to 1 p.m., The Commons.
International film night – French film, Ada de Yopogon, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., The Language lab KV236.

Wednesday, November 15:
Foreign language calligraphy, noon to 1 p.m., The Hub.
Henna, noon to 1 p.m., The Commons.
International film night – German film, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m., The Language lab KV236.

Thursday, November 16:
Peace Corp., noon to 1 p.m., The Hub.
International music videos, noon to 1 p.m., The Commons.
International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

At IU Southeast, the week’s activities are part of ongoing efforts to promote initiatives that prepare students to successfully be part of a global environment.

Celebrating Our Community

The IU Southeast Mental Health and Wellness Series committee is planning an event titled "Celebrating Our Community" from 5:30 - 8:00 PM on October 11 in UC 206 for students, faculty, staff, and the public. This event will include a motivational speaker, participation in cross-cultural speed connecting, a panel discussion, and international food. Please join us for this celebration of our community!

Approaching Accessibility as a Collective Responsibility in Higher Education

Higher education generally takes a deficit-centric view of disability and a compliance-oriented approach to the needs of people with disabilities. Have you ever wondered if there is an alternative approach? Register for the "Approaching Accessibility as a Collective Responsibility in Higher Education" webinar hosted by the FAPD and Healthy IU from 12:30 - 1:30 on October 5.

This webinar is presented by Corin Parsons (he/him), who is a disability advocate and PhD candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. Corin offers tools and strategies for approaching accessibility as a collective responsibility to the benefit of both disabled and nondisabled members of the IU community.

The Indiana University Regional Campuses BIPOC Affinity Groups and Mentoring Programs met on September 29 at IU Kokomo campus. This event was sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Regional Campuses and Online Education (VPRCOE) and organized by IU Regional Campus DEI Task Force. Eight faculty members and staff attended from IU Southeast campus attended this event: Seuth Chaleunphonh, Sau Hou Chang, Yunmi Choi, Doyin Coker-Kolo, Cathy Johnson, Ghansham Manwani, Rachel Star, and Yang Zhang.

Dr. Sue Sciame-Giesecke, VPRCOE, kicked off the event with a speech to reinstate the importance of BIPOC faculty and staff in student success across regional campus. Building a sense of belonging to recruit and retain them remains a priority for her office. The Mentoring Programs started with speed dating of mentors and potential mentees. Participants got the opportunities to get to know each other and share joys and concerns. Mentees were looking forward to having mentors guide their career journeys. The Affinity Groups (Asian, Black, and Hispanic) met to share ideas and thoughts how to move forward. After sharing issues and struggles, they were looking forward to building a network to support each other. Some groups were going to meet virtually, and some were planning in-person meetings on their own campus. Participants enjoyed a day of networking and support and were looking forward to meet again next semester.

The Intercultural Competence Certificate is back again this semester. Sign up for the free training sessions to expand your understanding of the complexities of intercultural communication and collaboration. Sessions will be a mix of virtual events and reading assignments that can be completed on your own. You may complete 4 sessions to earn the certificate or attend a smaller number of sessions without obtaining a certificate. These sessions start from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. almost every Friday from Sept 22 to Dec 8.
