I miss Guatemalan agriculture 😭😭 meeting so many journalists and media platform users was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life. Eating such amazing food, that was the best plus!

This trip was an incredibly humbling experience, filled with struggle, beauty, friendship, mishaps, and laughter. Going into Guatemala I was afraid of what I might see & how I might react to things, but once I arrived I realized that even in a country that has gone through so much hardship, there is still beauty, pride, and love. Everyone is human, no matter what work you do, where you live, what you wear, or what color you are. Guatemala is unique and beautiful, and I am so happy I got to experience it with a group like the one I had.

In 10 days, I feel like I came to Guatemala and left as two totally different people. I can go on and on about all I’ve taken away from the trip however all I really want to say is thank you. Thank you to the faculty at the School of Communication and Information, Rutgers Global Studies and just everyone involved in making this dream come true for me. I never thought I’d be able to study abroad because of financial burdens. Working with faculty for the past couple of months showed me that it’s possible. I will cherish this experience forever ❤️

On our last night in Guatemala we had a group reflection about what we’d all be taking away from this study abroad trip. Something that really stuck with me was what Erica Limatola pointed out about community. She explained how real change cannot come until you build real communities. And real communities are built once people get pass their pride and acknowledge that we need other people, we can’t do everything on our own. This was true within on our group doing the trip but also as we observed communities througout Guatemala !

In 10 days, I learned so much with my beautiful and bright peers. We saw history before our eyes in the buildings on the street. I saw volcanoes for the first time, a series of sights I as a first generation student never imagined I would see. I was further educated on the indigenous communities of the country, and the history that contributes to this land. But most importantly, I learned from the people and organizations we visited throughout this time the way that journalism/activism is contributing to Guatemala, and the challenges/triumphs that come from it. This is an experience I will carry with me wherever I am off to next. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen, I wish it was longer (and that I wasn’t back in Jersey) but the time spent here was so worth it. And now, a piece I will carry back with me here. Adelante!

It is definitely bittersweet to be back in the states. While I spent the majority of the day unpacking and catching up on my sleep, I had a great dinner with my mom. We sat in the restaurant for the longest time as I told her all of our adventures. I will miss Guatemala tremendously, but I know that someday, somehow I will make my way back there. I'm excited to see all the ways this trip will continue to impact my every day life going forward!

I feel so lucky to have been a part of this experience. Not only did I learn about Guatemalan culture and politics but I also got to experience it first hand. Study abroads are so important because they allow you to learn things far beyond what you would find in a classroom. I learned how to recognize my own biases about the people of Guatemala and the culture, I got the opportunity to speak to other journalists and hear their advice, and I got to see beauty and art beyond what I ever would have imagined. I am so thankful for this trip and all the wonderful people I got to meet because of it. It is an experience that is irreplaceable and will forever effect the way I look at the world around me.

I am grateful to JMS and Professor Marchi for creating this course and encouraging students to study abroad. The amount we learned in 10 days from meeting with different journalists, going to museums, and visiting Mayan villages is invaluable. We were immersed in another culture and experienced it first hand. Not only did I get to expand my knowledge, but I also gained a new family! I will never forget this experience and encourage anyone interested in this trip to apply! Professor Marchi, thank you for sharing your passion for social justice, Guatemala and travel with us! I definitely caught the travel bug!

I came into this trip wanting to travel to and learn about Central America, but what I actually gained far exceeds those original hopes. I’m coming away with great new friends, each of whom made the trip so special in their own way. I also have an increased awareness about our roles on an international scale, especially as individuals living in the United States. Among my many takeaways from the trip however, the main one is the idea of community. Historically it’s always been the strength of numbers that has been able to turn the tide and create positive change in the world — I now want to pursue this idea of community in all the work I do, on campus and beyond.

I also want to say a huge thank you to Professor Marchi for orchestrating this entire trip. I have gained such a multi-faceted understanding of both the struggles and triumphs of Guatemala and its people, which I definitely would not have gained without this course. My education, and my life, have really been enriched through this class + travel experience! Thank you!

Imagine 10 days ago, I was nervous and unsure able traveling with 10 other students to such an unfamiliar country. Now as I recap, I’m so happy and grateful for this trip. We experienced 3 different ways of living as we traveled to 3 different cities. Now that I’m home, I would like to use everything that I’ve learned abroad in my everyday life. For students who are interested, PLEASE GO!! I gained 10 new girlfriends and unforgetful memories.
P.S. thank you for allowing me to be the “mapquest” of the group 😊

Our last night in Antigua was a great conclusion to our studies and left me with a new impression regarding the resilience of the Mayan people. At Rainbow Cafe, we had the pleasure of watching Mayan children perform their cultural dances, and they even invited us up to join! Although there was a cruel and unforgiving past for the Mayan community, future generations show that they will not be silent.

I’m sad to be back in NJ, but unbelievably grateful for this journey!
