It is an honor to have called Derek L. Young my friend, my family. Derek Young was the President of the Rugters Class of 1987 when he passed away.

We are close to endowing the Class of 1987 Derek L. Young Memorial Scholarship.

I first met Derek in the summer of 1980 at Rutgers with the Rugters Upward Bound Program. The Upward Bound took students from New Brunswick, Plainfield and Perth Amboy to a Rutgers campus for 6 wks in the summers to get a headstart on the math, science and English courses for the upcoming school year. I have met so many great people and have remained friends-all due to Derek. BTW - his nickname was 'Secret Squirrel '.

After high school, we lost touch until our 20th Class Reunion. It was at these Class Reunions that we all got to know him as Derek and his 'scarlet/black cat-in-the-hat style hat. AND his great smile.

He returned each year until his health challenges would not sllow him to do so. Derek passed away in March 2020.

Help us cross the finish line in honoring the memory of Derek Young by making Scholarship donation will support Undergraduate students at Rugters!

The Class of 1987 Derek L. Young Memorial Scholarship is close to hitting the goal of $50,000 to endow this new scholarship which will aid an undergraduate New Brunswick student for each of their 4 years.

Derek was was friends with everyone! As a Rutgers Football Letter-winner, he followed and all He wore his red fedora to football games and his scarlet and black cat-in-the-hat style hat at reunion, homecoming and most other events. Derek volunteered and supported events faithfully until his health challenges would not allow him to do so. Derek Young passed in March 2020.
