Rutgers University Debate Union

Rutgers University Debate Union This is the official site for the Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU). RUDU meets twice weekly to prepare for these weekly tournaments.

The Rutgers University Debate Union (RUDU) was founded in 2001 and is a full member in good standing of the American Parliamentary Debate Association (APDA). APDA is the elite league of intercollegiate parliamentary debate, comprised of nearly all of the top-ranked colleges and universities on the eastern seaboard, as well as some additional western schools. Notable participants include the entire

Ivy League, Stanford, the University of Chicago, MIT, Johns Hopkins, Duke, Swarthmore, Williams, and Amherst. Competitions take place nearly every weekend throughout the academic year, from September through December in the fall and January through April in the spring, culminating in an annual National Championship. An additional North American Championship, a joint competition between APDA and CUSID, the elite Canadian parliamentary league, is held each January. Meetings are run by the Debate Coach in conjunction with student leadership, which consists of an elected six-member executive board. Meeting activities focus on the refining of skills and strategy to maximize student success in competitions. These include lectures and drills on rhetoric, information and background on a variety of subjects (such as law, economics, foreign policy, and philosophy), logical argumentation and analysis, and the basic format and structure of debate rounds. Each meeting is concluded with two full practice rounds for participants, judged by the Debate Coach and (at times) varsity debaters, with extensive critiques designed to maximize participant development. After struggling in obscurity since its founding in 2001, RUDU has recently enjoyed a meteoric rise to success and notoriety on APDA. In 2009-2010, the team first cracked the cumulative annual College of the Year (COTY) rankings, finishing the season at 24th in the league after advancing to elimination rounds at several tournaments. The next year, however, the team blossomed into a full-fledged contender, placing itself near the top of the rankings in every category. The team finished 2010-2011 ranked 5th in the league, behind only Yale, Harvard, Brandeis, and Boston University, having peaked at 2nd earlier in the season. Having never qualified a team for the National Championships in nine prior seasons, RUDU qualified five individual debaters, enabling Rutgers to send four full teams to Nationals instead of the usual one. RUDU won three tournaments, a top speaker award, and several top novice speaker awards. Rutgers’ best team was ranked 7th in the league in the Team of the Year (TOTY) standings and its best first-year debater ranked 2nd in the Novice of the Year (NOTY) list.

2011-2012 found RUDU back in the top ten, finishing the year ranked 9th. Four debaters qualified for Nationals, with three full teams attending. RUDU made three final rounds, won a top speaker award and two top novice speaker awards while placing two debaters in top ten NOTY, at 3rd and 10th. RUDU also placed sixth at the 2012 North American Parliamentary Debate Championship, by far its highest finish in history at a title tournament. The most recent season, 2012-2013, was RUDU’s best ever, finishing the year ranked 3rd. Seven debaters qualified for Nationals, with five full teams attending. RUDU made four final rounds, winning two tournaments, won two top speaker awards, earned 4th NOTY, placed ten speakers in the SOTY rankings, and finished 9th at the National Championships. Rutgers broke a record 41 times to varsity out-rounds and closed the season on a 14-weekend streak of breaking varsity, spanning more than a full semester. RUDU always welcomes new members and visitors at meetings, which are held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:00 PM in Murray Hall 210 on the College Avenue Campus.

Last on our member spotlights is Tim Formanuk! Tim is a senior majoring in Business Analytics and Info Tech. He says he joined debate to hear himself talk, although we know the true reason is because he finds debate and the people on the team fun. Tim says his favorite debate memory was going to the Columbia Tournament and hanging out with the team during crash housing. Besides Debate, he is involved with the Rutgers Esports Club. In his free time, Tim likes to hang out with friends, go hiking, and play online games. He says he doesn't have a particular favorite marine animal but if he had to choose he'd go with the dolphin. One cool fact about Tim is that during quarantine he built his own PC and keyboard.

Gladwin An is the next member of our team in the RUDU spotlight series. He is a junior majoring in economics and psychology. Gladwin joined RUDU to improve his public speaking skills and to meet interesting people. In our opinion, it’s safe to say he has done both. Gladwin’s favorite RUDU memory is hanging out late into the night after practice talking about The Legend of Korra TV series. In addition to debate, Gladwin is involved with the Anime and Japanese Environmental Society and the Rutgers Economics Society. Gladwin’s hobbies include gaming and watching anime. Gladwin says that his favorite marine animal is any one that he can eat. One fun fact about Gladwin is that he can not maintain a sleep schedule for his life. The other members of RUDU can confirm this.

Up next on our member spotlight is Alex Purn! Alex is a junior majoring in Philosophy and Economics. He did debate in high school and when he came to Rutgers he saw joining debate as a great opportunity to meet like minded friends (it was!) Alex says his favorite debate memory is hanging out with the team on the drive to tournaments and at socials. These moments were filled with deep conversations about the world which helped Alex learn a lot about himself and other people, as well as make some awesome friends. Besides debate, Alex has been involved with the Rutgers history club and philosophy club. In his spare time he likes to play League of Legends, collect shoes, build Lego sets, and hang out with his girlfriend. Alex’s favorite marine animal is the orca, and one fun fact about him is that he is almost always running a low grade fever because of his body temperature.

Our next member in our spotlight series is Fiona He. She is in the third year of a six-year Doctor of Pharmacy program. Fiona joined debate because she thought it would be fun. She says she has stuck around because the members of the team are nice and interesting people, and of course, because she was right about debate being fun! Fiona’s favorite things about being a member of RUDU are having the opportunity to go to debate competitions, meet people from other colleges, and hanging out late into the night with other members of the team after practice. In her free time, Fiona likes to read, write, and sing in the shower. Her favorite marine animal is coral. A fun fact about Fiona is that her favorite color is blue.

Continuing our member spotlight is Emily Chow! Emily is a junior majoring in English and Economics. She’s also the Treasurer for RUDU. Emily says she joined RUDU because she wanted to learn how to sound smart while arguing (and she’s definitely exceeded this goal!) Her favorite debate memory is debating a round about cults, and getting into the nitty-gritty. Emily is also involved with The Rutgers Review, as their marketing director, the Aresty Research Center, and the Asian Student Council. In her free time, Emily likes to bake and read, and her favorite marine animal is the sea otter. A little known fact about Emily is that she has hyperextended elbows. Come meet Emily, and her hyperextended elbows, at our info session!

Sasha Chuprakova is the novice mentor for RUDU and the next member in our team spotlight series. She is a senior majoring in Economics and Political Science. She says she joined RUDU because she likes the sound of her own voice, but we all know it’s because she enjoys the competitive nature of debate. Sasha has been on the RUDU Executive Board since the beginning of her sophomore year but still finds the time to help run the Rutgers chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha (the national political science honors society), serve as an ambassador for the Rutgers Honors College, and research women’s labor participation. In her free time, you can find Sasha doing a variety of outdoor activities: from hiking to backpacking to kayaking, to climbing. She also likes to cook, read, and collect rocks. Her favorite marine animal is the Leatherback sea turtle, and a fun fact about Sasha is that she was born in Russia.

Next up in our member spotlight series is Benjamin Mione! Ben is a senior, majoring in Political Science, and is also the VP of RUDU. He did debate in high school so it was a no-brainer for him to continue debate in college. Ben's favorite debate memory was pro-aming with a pretty established debater in his first semester of debate, and breaking (way to go guys!). He was pleasantly surprised with how willing experienced debaters are to help new debaters from other teams. Besides debate, Ben is involved with the Rutgers Democrats and the pre-law society. In his free time, Ben likes to cook, go sailing, do some archery, hike some trails and go camping, as well as bet on politics. Ben says his favorite marine animal is the sea otter, and a cool little fact about him is that he has seen every Leonardo DiCaprio film made in the last 20 years. Come talk to Ben about Leo Dicap films at our info session!

Kicking off our member spotlight series is Paola Apolinario. Paola is the President of the Rutgers Debate Union. They are a senior majoring in philosophy and linguistics. Paola has wanted to debate since middle school, but their middle and high schools did not have debate teams. They had given up on debating by the time they got to Rutgers; however, after seeing the team at the involvement fair and being surprised by how welcoming the team was, with the support of their friends, Paola overcame their initial hesitation and joined the team. Paola’s favorite debate memory is rooming overnight with the rest of the Rutgers team at one of their first tournaments. Even though they were at a debate competition, it felt more like a sleepover with close friends. Paola’s hobbies, other than debate, include hiking, camping, cooking, and rollerblading. Their favorite sea animal is the manta ray, and one fun fact about Paola is that they play seven instruments, come to our info session and see if you can guess which ones!

Rutgers had a great time last weekend at UMD/BU ProAms. Our novices and our varsity had a blast and learned a ton. Thank you to the RUDU members who volunteered to judge, and thank you to the Maryland Parliamentary Debate Society and the Boston University Debate Society for hosting a great tournament!

This past weekend, Rutgers teamed up with Yale to bring the league Yale/Rutgers: Queen’s Gambit-Debate Edition! (Yutgers Gambit for short). We had a blast planning and running this tournament with the Yale Debate Society. We could not have asked for better co-hosts, thank you! A big thanks to our tab staff, Sasha Chuprakova, Jack Kelly, and TO Rodda John for their excellent tab work and ability to run tab smoothly. Thank you to Benjamin Mione for helping get a great selection of dinos and judges for the tournament, and thank you to all the dinos who came to judge, we really appreciated it! Lastly thank you to our tournament directors, Michael Ning, Paola Apolinario, and Bradley Tidwell for running such a smooth and mostly on time tournament. Congratulations to our varsity champs, no more parties in GA, and our novice champs NYU G8, and a huge thank you to all the teams that attended!
