Music at Muskingum

Music at Muskingum page of the Department of Music
Muskingum University, New Concord, Ohio Over 50 concerts and recitals are presented each year, both on and off campus.

Muskingum University’s Department of Music offers the Bachelor of Arts degree in music and music education, as well as minors in music and musical theatre. With its six full-time and fifteen adjunct faculty, the Department is large enough to offer a variety of study and performance opportunities, yet small enough to ensure that the needs of individual students are consistently addressed. Students

from across campus participate in numerous vocal and instrumental ensembles; in addition, the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra, Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, and Muskingum Choral Society represent musical partnerships between the university, the New Concord community, and the surrounding region. An accredited institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1937, the Department is also accredited through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Ohio Department of Education. The Department of Music is housed in Otto and Fran Walter Hall, the newest academic building at Muskingum, which boasts acoustically-designed classrooms and rehearsal facilities, a state-of-the-art music technology lab, and spacious studios and practice rooms. Scholarships for music majors, minors, and participants are available to students by audition. For audition information or other inquiries, contact the Department of Music at (740) 826-8095, by email at [email protected], or visit our web page at www.muskingum.edu/dept/music.

🎓 Senior Spotlight 🎓

Heather Dawson '26

Heather graduated with a music education major with a vocal emphasis. She sang in the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers and played euphonium in the Wind Ensemble and Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds.

She also served as Vice-President and President of Sigma Alpha Iota as well as Vice-President of Membership; President of OCMEA; and was Music Chair in her sorority, FAD.

Her favorite memory at Muskingum is going out after concerts with her friends, having great conversations and making fun memories. Heather's advice to new Muskies: "don’t be afraid to talk to your older peers for advice because they are the most knowledgeable on the student experience and how to handle the stress that comes with transitioning into college."

Heather just finished student teaching in the Ridgewood Local Schools and is currently in the job market for a music teaching position.

Best of luck, Heather! We are very proud of you and wish you all the best!

At the concert, The Music Department was honored to present President Hasseler with a conductor's baton to commemorate her ten years leading Muskingum University, along with a facsimile of a handwritten arrangement of the university's Alma Mater.
