Nicole Manning (BK ‘27) is a Political Science major from the Bronx, NY in the Intensive Education Studies Program. In reflecting on what drew her to EDST, she highlights the interdisciplinary nature of the program and how her and her cohort are not all doing the same thing. “Why we’re appreciating education has been so different,” she comments. “It’s all parts of campus, education is beyond humanities and social sciences.”
Using New York Public Schools as a case study, Nathan Dudley’ course “Public School Reform Policy in the United States” was a favorite of Nicole’s. The class brings the students into the NYPS classrooms and makes a connection between theory and tangible lessons being applied in the classroom, something Nicole Manning has also appreciated from the program as a whole. “Oftentimes education can be framed as solely jumping to the classroom. Education Studies have allowed me to engage in education that feels comfortable to me.”
Now in the early stages of her Senior Capstone, she is expanding her interest in NYPS to focus on how black adolescents engage in self directed sustaining pedagogy outside the school system. Her goal is to challenge the negative stereotypes of society, advocating for its use as a tool for abolition, learning history and sustaining identities.
This is only the start of studying media and digital literacy for Nicole, who plans to get a masters degree in digital humanity with the ultimate goal of creating a pathway for students to be confident but critical consumers of media. But not before spending time in the classroom helping and supporting young people. “It’s all very relational, I love connecting with people.”

For SophiaMarie Rodriguez (TD ‘28), an Art major from Grayson, Georgia in the Intensive Education Studies Program, education offers a diverse set of tools to grasp the possibilities that the world offers. From history to psychology to linguistics to political science, she says Education Studies “provides a cohesive framework to understand how all the disciplines fit together.” At Yale, she has particularly found interest in exploring play-based learning, language and literacy, and specialized or magnet schools.

In line with bringing different topics and perspectives together, SophiaMarie’s future in education contains many evolving possibilities; after Yale, she hopes to fulfill her long-term dream of becoming a middle school art teacher. Recently, her interests have also been piqued by the prospect of becoming a toy designer. No matter what, however, she hopes she is “still learning, of course.”

The Education Studies community has been pivotal to SophiaMarie’s Yale experience as well. Even before she began taking classes in the Education Studies department, she would participate in weekly Tea & Cookies events. Entering these spaces and talking to upperclassmen about their own passions and involvements in education inspired her own journey. She particularly enjoyed Professor Jill Campbell’s “Children and Books” seminar, as it sparked vibrant discussions on her and her peers’ own experiences with reading and literacy in childhood.

Although she sees Education Studies as an important pocket of Yale, she also emphasizes that education is a formative part of every one of our lives. “We have all had some sort of education and it has shaped us into who we are today,” she says. “I hope that my work in education helps other students be shaped into the people they deserve to become.”

This past weekend, many Yale Education Studies students organized and taught at Yale Splash, a dynamic one-day program for students from all over in grades 7-12, featuring classes covering a diverse range of engaging subjects! Even Associate Director Lauren Carpenter’s kids sat in on EDST intensive scholar SophiaMarie’s pattern design lesson! Congrats to all involved. Save the date for Yale Sprout, April 11-12, 2026, open to students in grades 6-9.
