For twenty years, Brad Gentry has been at the heart of CBEY, shaping what we do and who we are.

Brad built his career at the intersections: between business and the environment, capital and conservation, science and policy, and, most importantly, between people with different expertise and perspectives. That instinct to build bridges became part of CBEY’s DNA.

After more than three decades at Yale, Brad retired this summer, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond any one program or title. It lives in the students he advised, the colleagues he connected, the ideas he helped move into action, and the community that will continue carrying this work forward.

As we celebrate CBEY’s 20th anniversary, we’re also celebrating the person who helped make so much of that journey possible.

This recent Forbes article highlights the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning’s work to advance Yale’s expanded commitment to teaching and learning, including efforts to “open the gates” and extend Yale learning beyond campus.

It’s an exciting direction for Yale, and one CBEY is proud to contribute to by helping lead online certificate education that connects learners around the world with Yale faculty, expertise, and applied learning.

Our Yale Clean and Equitable Energy Development (CEED) certificate is one example: a fully online program for professionals seeking practical skills to develop clean energy projects that deliver economic, environmental, and community benefits. Applications for the next CEED cohort are currently open.

What could the future of clean energy look like in communities around the world?

For their capstone projects, members of the 2026 CEED cohort developed ideas ranging from a community microgrid and public park on New Haven’s Mill River, to expanding rooftop solar and battery access for affordable housing in Stamford, to a solar mini-grid designed to bring first-time electricity access to a village in Tanzania.

Twenty years ago, an ambitious idea was planted: that our most pressing environmental challenges could be met by bringing together the worlds of business and the environment to develop the ideas, partnerships, and do-ers needed to create a more resilient future for people and the planet.

Over the past two decades, that seed has grown into a global network of students, faculty, alumni, and practitioners whose work continues to shape industries, influence policy, and inspire new ways of thinking about sustainability.

As we begin celebrating our 20th anniversary, we're delighted to launch a new website dedicated to the story of CBEY.

Inside, you'll find the roots of our journey, from our founding and defining milestones to the programs, partnerships, and people who have helped our ecosystem reach farther than we could have imagined. It's a place to reflect on where we've been, honor those who made it possible, and imagine what comes next.

But anniversaries are about more than looking back. They are moments to pause, celebrate how far we've come, and gather momentum for the path ahead.

Over the coming year, we'll continue sharing stories from across the CBEY community, showcasing optimists taking action: the people and ideas that have shaped our first twenty years while exploring the possibilities that lie on the horizon.

“You cannot achieve sustainability goals without including fashion. It is connective tissue to deeply divergent global problems.” CBEY is delighted to welcome Michelle Gabriel as our newest Resident Fellow and the lead of Sustainable Fashion at Yale.

With over 15 years of experience in the fashion industry and a Ph.D. in progress at Glasgow Caledonian University, Michelle brings a rare combination of industry expertise and academic rigor to one of the world’s largest and most pressing sustainability challenges. She lectures at Yale and Columbia, chaired the NYC Local Law 112 Textile Purchasing Task Force, and is part of the coalition advancing the New York State Fashion Act.
