Yale SNMA & LMSA

Yale SNMA & LMSA Yale Chapter of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA).

Motivated by the growing need for underrepresented physicians of color and inspired by the missions of the national SNMA and LMSA organizations, we are a group of students committed to combating inequities in our profession and in our community. Within the Yale medical community, we build mentorship connections across various stages of professional development -- from the undergraduate to the facu

lty levels -- by collaborating with the Yale Minority Association for Pre-Health Students (MAPS), the Minority Housestaff Organization (MHO), and the Minority Organization for Retention and Expansion (MORE). In our community, we participate in service activities including science enrichment and career exposure programs for inner-city students of color, pipeline programs for underprivileged students interested in health professions, tobacco use prevention programs, and an annual community health fair. Beyond this, our members have demonstrated interest in additional community engagement and stand in leadership positions at Yale's student-run free clinic, on our annual Hunger and Homelessness fundraising committee, and in various global health initiatives. At present, several of our members serve in leadership positions on both regional and national levels of SNMA and LMSA. We are thrilled to support one another as we challenge health inequity both within and beyond our New Haven home!

In honor of the last day of Black History Month, we want to take the time to recognize and celebrate 3 faculty here at Yale. Swipe through and read below

John Francis, MD, PhD, is a highly respected medical education leader with over 11 years of experience in student affairs. Dr. Francis is a member of the senior education leadership team and leads the school’s Office of Student Affairs. He is responsible for overseeing the creation and provision of services and activities that support the academic, personal, and professional development of students throughout their time at YSM. He has received several awards at Yale including, among others: the Admired Physician, Teacher and Role Model Award. His caring and thoughtful nature is an attribute many students speak about during during their time at Yale.

Beverley J Sheares, MD, MS is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Pulmonary, Allergy/Immunology, & Sleep Medicine section at Yale University School of Medicine. Dr. Sheares serves as the Director for the Pediatric Pulmonary Fellowship Program, the Medical Director of the Aerodigestive Program, and the Health Equity Thread Leader for the Yale School of Medicine. Dr. Sheares develops health equity content for the medical school curriculum, partners with faculty to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusive content in existing courses, and creates opportunities for faculty and student development in health equity. Many students admire Dr. Sheares for her work as a career and research mentor who has helped guide them through the medical journey.

Dr. Latimore joined Yale in 2017 from the University of California, Davis School of Medicine, where he was associate dean for student and resident diversity. He is Yale School of Medicine’s first deputy dean for diversity and inclusion and its first chief diversity officer. He is devoted to increasing diversity within medical and academic spaces and to improving the climate of Yale School of Medicine’s learning and working environments. In his role, he has implemented a comprehensive program to improve faculty diversity and retention that focuses on policies, programs, and building community.

We write to you today concerning the tragic events that continue to unfold worldwide. Whether due to the recent hurricanes, political turmoil, or the ongoing pandemic in the United States, throughout the Caribbean, in Afghanistan, and elsewhere, we want to acknowledge this time as one of disharmony and chaos for many peoples in our YSM community and globally.

These events remind us to lean on and hold up one another in seemingly constant trying times. With this in mind, we are reminded of our goals to promote a more equitable and safe world for our patients, families, and communities. We must not be disillusioned by the injustice and instability around us as future physicians and leaders.

To our brothers and sisters affected by these tumultuous times, we are here to support and stand by you in any way we can. If you ever need anyone to talk to or a listening ear you can reach out to any of our board members or DM this account.
