Q: Did you always know you would Major in French at Conn?
A: No! I first joined the department to learn French. For study abroad, it was important for me to enroll in a local French university so I needed to dedicated time and effort to improving my French. Once I got back from Paris, all the courses I took counted towards the French Major, which was extremely convenient.
Q: Was it challenging to take courses in French in a Parisian university?
A: What was more difficult wasn’t the classes themselves (I understood everything) but feeling shy about participating in class. This anxiety extended to social settings. When I bump into someone in the metro and say sorry, I always wonder if I sounded weird. We learned in class to say “désolée” but the day-to-day use of the language is different. People say “t’inquiète” instead, and you’ll only learn that through immersion. Eventually, I adapted but the transition was a little stressful.
Q: What was the first course you took at Conn that got you interested in French?
A: The first course was my Intermediate French course with Professor Bédoui, who is from Tunisia. Professor Bédoui is really cool and taught us a lot of new things we hadn’t learned at the Beginner level. I also took Introduction to Islamic Studies as a FLAC section in French with her. Even though I wasn’t capable of having a discussion in French yet, this course allowed me to recognize French as a living language, not just conjugation tables and vocabulary words on cue cards. Before then, I always viewed French as a game or a puzzle. Even though I enjoy that aspect of language learning, Professor Bédoui’s class made it real.
Q: What would be your advice for students who want to study in the French and Francophone Department?
A: Sometimes, you will feel shy about speaking French but the more you put yourself out there the easier it gets. There is nothing wrong with making mistakes. I’m a perfectionist, so I had to learn this the hard way! I also think the Study Away experience is extremely helpful. It will be tough at first but the result is extremely rewarding.
