Connecticut College Hispanic Studies Department Updates on the faculty, students, and staff of Connecticut College's Hispanic Studies and Latin Amer

Spanish is the second language of the United States and one of the three most spoken languages in the world today. Recent census reports indicate that Hispanics now form the largest minority population in the United States. Our department of Hispanic studies offers flexible majors adaptable to varied student interests and needs. The traditional focus on language and literature is a departmental st

rength, complemented by new offerings in cultural studies, interdisciplinary Latin American studies, and in coursework toward teaching certification. The department participates in honors study for all of the majors it offers. Knowledge of Spanish language and Hispanic cultures gives job candidates a competitive edge in fields like education, business, diplomacy, social work, government, law, library science, media, travel, publishing, economics, health care, translation and the social sciences. The critical analysis and problem solving skills acquired in Hispanic studies are applicable to a range of endeavors, including graduate programs.

Open to Connecticut College Students:

MSC SCOLA 34th Annual Conference on Latinx Affairs is the largest undergraduate student-led conference in the nation, and it is house at Texas A&M University.

The Memorial Student Center’s 34th Annual Student Conference on Latinx Affairs (MSC SCOLA) is thrilled to invite you to participate in this year's conference as a workshop presenter or as a facilitator. MSC SCOLA is a conference that invites students from around the nation to discuss significant issues that impact the Latinx community. My name is David Hinojos and I am serving as the Director of Conference Workshops for The Memorial Student Center’s 34th Annual Student Conference on Latinx Affairs (MSC SCOLA).

The MSC SCOLA Executive team would like to invite you to submit an application to participate in this year’s conference as a Workshop Presenter or Facilitator! This year’s conference is set to take place from March 31 - April 2, 2022. With an engaging theme of “Yo soy, yo y mis circunstancias: I am Here to Stay”. Translating to “I am myself and my circumstances”, meaning that one can be more than what life has dealt them. MSC SCOLA represents the largest student-led conference based on Latinx Affairs in the Nation, but above all, the conference is an opportunity to come together to promote cultural awareness and representation. Rather than dwelling on the suppression of the past, MSC SCOLA embraces our differences, upbringings, and stories of our community. We work towards promoting a safe space that sparks intellectual and meaningful conversations on topics that pertain to the Latinx student today. Overall, our multi-day conference is a life-changing experience meant to focus on the positives while reflecting on the stories of perseverance that shaped who we are today.

Becoming a Workshop presenter:

Workshops serve a key role in the success and impact of our conference as they are the main way to promote our objectives and theme of the conference. The goal of the workshops is to elaborate in depth on topics that our presenters have mastery in, whether it’s developing leadership skills or an in-depth discussion of current events in the Latinx community.

Preferred workshops topics may include, but are not limited to:

● Activism through the Arts

● Community Involvement

● Arts & Science

● Cultural Exploitation

● Latinx and the Workplace

● Current Events and Their Impact

● Higher Education

● Health and community

● Latinx and STEM programs

Becoming a Facilitator:

In addition to workshop presenters, we are also looking for facilitators. Facilitators are integral to the success of the conference because they encourage insightful conversations connecting to the theme of the conference. They also provide delegates with the opportunity to interact with a professional member of the community. Each facilitator is assigned a roundtable with 6-10 students that meet for multiple sessions throughout the conference.

If you are interested in serving as a workshop presenter or facilitator for MSC SCOLA 34, please follow the link below to submit an application:
