For Joshua Duclos ’04, a connection to Eastern Europe that began at Conn has grown into meaningful work spanning education, philosophy and service.
Since 2022, Josh has made five trips to Ukraine as a volunteer lecturer at several universities. During his visits, he has also volunteered in a kitchen preparing meals for soldiers and recently participated in the international academic conference Law, Morality, and Responsibility, sponsored by University College London and the University of Oxford.
Josh’s connection to the region began as a Camel, when he studied Czech at Conn and spent a semester studying in Czechia. After graduation, he returned as a Fulbright Scholar. He has since co-authored Utopia, Dystopia, and Democracy: Teaching Philosophy in Wartime Ukraine with a Ukrainian colleague, reflecting on the experience of teaching philosophy during the ongoing conflict.
Josh was also the recipient of Connecticut College’s Mach Arom ’89 Award in 2009.
