Local friends: There will be a memorial service for Nancy in Harkness Chapel on Saturday, April 20th, at 11 am. Chaplain Haskins will conduct the service, which will include music played by John Anthony and sung by Jurate Waller. A reception in Ernst Common Room will follow, catered by the College.
Nancy worked in the Psychology Department office for over 40 years, and she was an alumna of the college. It would be wonderful to reminisce, celebrate her life, and visit with each other (Nancy's favorite past time!).

πŸ’š Faculty Feature Friday πŸ’š Professor Jason Nier

What did you want to be when you were little?
An Astronaut but that didn't work outβ€¦πŸ§‘πŸ»β€πŸš€βοΈπŸš€

Why did you decide to study Psychology/Neuroscience?
Prof. Nier’s uncle was a social psychologist, so it was part of the family business. Also, he took a social psychology course when he was sophomore at Penn State and was instantly hooked! Prof. Nier loved the idea of studying social issues using the tools of science - and still do

A book or podcast about PSY/NEU that stood out to youβ€¦πŸ“š
All of the books by Malcolm Gladwell are infused with tons of social psychology. β€œBlink” would probably be Prof. Nier’s favorite of the bunch. It makes social psychology very relatable and point out how applicable it is to real life..

Fun Fact:
Since Prof. Nier is from Western Pennsylvania, he is a a diehard Pittsburgh Steelers fan! πŸ’›β€οΈπŸ’™

πŸ’› Belated Faculty Feature Friday πŸ’›

Professor Jeff Moher!

What did you want to be when you grow up?
The earliest thing I can remember is wanting to be an inventor - I wanted to invent a TV that you could wear as a watch. ⌚

Why Psychology?
I had the opportunity to work in a research lab through Michigan's undergraduate research opportunity program. I was already interested in psychology and philosophy because I was interested in big questions about the mind and brain. After seeing what research was like up close, I decided I wanted to do something where I could try to answer these big questions with data! πŸ’‘

Important Psychology/Neuroscience Book or Podcast
The man who mistook his wife for a hat, by Oliver Sacks. It's a book where each chapter is a story about different neuropsychology patients with disorders that highlight the surprising ways in which the brain works. I first read it in high school and it's a big reason why I chose this career.

Fun Fact
I was in a Beatles cover band in college called the Dung Beatles! These days I still play a bit of guitar and drums, mostly with my kids (my oldest daughter started taking piano lessons and we started playing songs together!) ❀️
