Katharine Drexel and the Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament, is the only historically Black, Catholic college in the USA. The only historically Black, Catholic university in the United States, XULA is a private, liberal-arts based, co-educational institution offering 40 undergraduate majors, five master’s degree programs and a doctor of pharmacy program. More than one-half of its 3,100 students are from Louisiana, but it draws students from nearly all fifty states and 35 countries.

Join Xavier Creative Writing for an afternoon of readings featuring L’Nya Freeman-Jordan, Grace Duncan and Ysabella Porche, recipients of the 2026 Truman Capote Scholarships for Creative Writing, with special guest Kendall Cormier.

Come hear these talented writers share their work and celebrate Xavier’s creative writing community.

Today, Xavier University of Louisiana joins the nation in remembering the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the courage of the first responders, service members and ordinary people who answered tragedy with extraordinary acts of bravery and compassion.

Twenty-five years later, we pause in remembrance and prayer for the victims, their families and all whose lives were forever changed.

May we continue to choose compassion over division, service over self and hope in the face of darkness.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Due to a power outage affecting campus operations, Xavier University of Louisiana will have a delayed start today, August 27, with campus opening at 10 a.m.

Students, faculty and staff should plan to report to campus at 10 a.m. unless otherwise directed by their supervisor or academic unit.

We will continue to monitor conditions and provide additional updates as needed. Please use caution when traveling to campus.

Xavier remembers Jerome “Big Duck” Smith. Words by University President Dr. Reynold Verret.

“New Orleans has lost a moral witness, Jerome “Big Duck” Smith.

Mr. Smith devoted his life to the pursuit of justice and the preservation of the history, culture and spirit of his beloved city. As a Freedom Rider and member of the Congress of Racial Equality, he confronted segregation with extraordinary courage. Through ‘Tambourine and Fan’ and his decades of work with young people, he ensured that the stories, struggles, and cultural traditions of New Orleans would be carried forward by subsequent generations.

Xavier University of Louisiana was privileged to recognize Mr. Smith with an honorary degree in 2022. In his remarks, he spoke of the importance of representation, reflected on the brutality endured by those who served in the Civil Rights Movement, and encouraged graduates to pursue education and lives of purpose fearlessly. Mr. Smith’s life embodied Xavier University of Louisiana’s mission through his unwavering commitment to justice, human dignity and service.

We extend our prayers and deep condolences to his family, loved ones and the countless people whose lives he shaped. His was a life of consequence, and his light will endure in the city he served so faithfully.”

Recently, IBCS welcomed Archbishop James Checchio of New Orleans and Bishop Brendan Cahill of Victoria, Texas, a 1994 IBCS graduate, for a day of faith, fellowship and community.

The bishops joined IBCS for Morning Praise, visited theology courses, met with IBCS administrators, presided at Noon Mass and spent time with Xavier students and staff. Fr. R. Tony Ricard, Director of the Office of Black Catholic Ministry and a fellow 1994 IBCS graduate, also joined the visit.

A meaningful gathering centered on faith, formation and the future of Black Catholic leadership.

Join us on Martha’s Vineyard for a powerful conversation on history, justice, and the work that continues.

As part of XU on the Vineyard, Xavier University of Louisiana will host a screening of A House Divided, followed by a panel discussion featuring President Dr. Reynold Verret, Rev. Dr. Starsky Wilson, and Mrs. Caroline Hunter.

Due to anticipated weather conditions, Xavier University of Louisiana will operate remotely on Wednesday, July 22. The campus will be closed; only essential personnel should report to campus. College of Medicine faculty and staff should confirm with their supervisors regarding work expectations and operational details.
Students should contact their instructors or check Brightspace and their Xavier email for information on how classes will be conducted.
The university will continue to closely monitor weather conditions and provide additional updates as needed should conditions pose a concern.

Congratulations to Vincent “Vinny” Barraza, head of Archives and Special Collections at Xavier University of Louisiana, on receiving the 2026 Sister M. Claude Lane, O.P. Memorial Award from the Society of American Archivists.

The award recognizes archivists who have made significant contributions to the field of religious archives. For more than a decade, Barraza has worked to preserve and elevate Xavier’s history through oral history projects, archival initiatives, and his contributions to “A Century of Faith, Education & Service: The Xavier University of Louisiana Story.”

His dedication to preserving the legacy of the nation’s only Catholic HBCU ensures Xavier’s story will continue to inspire future generations.
