I guess I never said it publicly, but I retired from teaching music a few years ago after 28 years. I'm still always willing to help friends by answering questions, etc.

Even if you've only learned some basic chords and a few songs you're using music theory whether you realize it or not. You can then decide to take it further and learn more theory or not. Pursuing it farther and learning more won't limit you or your creativity any more than learning the chords and songs you already know did. Simple is always still a choice. More knowledge means more available options. Less knowledge means fewer options. Yes, there are very good, successful musicians who haven't learned a ton of theory, but the idea that if they had it would have screwed them up somehow is just dumb. Only people who haven't learned much theory say such things. No musician in history has ever said "damn, I used to be an amazing, creative musician but then I leaned too much about music and now I suck."
