As the Year Draws to a Close — One Brother's Reflection.
As the final light of the year has settled softly upon the trestleboard, where we found ourselves, so many times, within the warmth of the Lodge—where the air carries echoes of laughter, quiet instruction, and the steady rhythm of work well shared. There, between familiar pillars, where we look back not as strangers to one another, but as Brothers who have broken bread together, stood shoulder to shoulder during degrees, and lingered long after the gavel fell—unwilling to rush away from fellowship hard-earned. We remember the nights when new Brothers took their first steps in due and ancient form, the hush of the room broken only by words passed down through time. We recall gatherings filled with conversation and good cheer, tables well-worn, glasses raised, and visitors welcomed as friends before the evening was through. Moments of instruction, moments of joy, and moments where peace and harmony quietly prevailed.
To all my Brothers of the Craft: reflect gently.
Stand for a moment between the pillars and take your measure—not with harsh judgment, but with the same kindness you would offer a Brother by the fire. For none of us are finished stones. We are living ashlar, still shaped by the work, polished by patience, and guided by the Light we seek together.
If your step faltered this year, acknowledge it.
If a word spoken cast a shadow where warmth was needed, make it right. If you carried old burdens—anger, regret, or troubles unspoken—set them down here, among Brothers, where no man labors alone. Our Craft reminds us that the Temple is built not in haste, but through steady effort and renewal. That each opening of the Lodge is another chance to square our actions, to true our intentions, and to return to the work with clearer eyes and steadier hands.
Breathe in the quiet promise of the coming year— like the glow of the fire on a cold evening. Breathe out what no longer serves the building of your inner Temple. For none of us know when the last grain of sand will fall… when the final gavel will sound… or when we will be called to lay down our working tools and rest from our labors.
So in the New Year, let us make the most of the time still granted. Linger a little longer in fellowship. Love our Brothers more deeply. Forgive more freely. Carry the warmth of the Lodge with us into the world beyond its doors. And as we step forward together into a new year,
let us do so not as perfect men— but as better ones, bound by friendship, guided by Light, and ever worthy of the title Freemason!!! So Soll Es Sein.
