Standing up to cancer doesn’t end when treatment does.

For many cancer survivors, lymphedema can be a painful, chronic complication of treatment, and there is currently no approved drug therapy for it.

This , we’re highlighting new Tulane research that found semaglutide, a medication commonly used for diabetes and weight loss, may help the lymphatic system work more effectively. The findings could point toward new ways to treat, and potentially even prevent, lymphedema.

September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and the Crescent City Connection will turn red on Friday, September 18, to honor the 3,000 Louisianans living with the disease. The annual Sickle Cell Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, and there's still time to register for this great event.

Alongside med-peds resident Tuhin Choudhary, Dr. Chang will develop The Great Childhood Hike, an interactive project selected as one of 23 nationwide to receive funding through the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Back to Bedside Initiative.

Nursing and medical students at Tulane School of Medicine are learning side by side, strengthening the teamwork that drives excellent patient care.

A newly renovated, 25,000-square-foot home for the nursing program will expand opportunities for interprofessional training through simulation exercises, standardized patient experiences, and other shared learning activities.

Twenty-one years ago, Dr. Lee Hamm canoed through the flooded streets of New Orleans to check on patients and healthcare workers at Charity Hospital in the days after Hurricane Katrina.

Last week, the dean of Tulane University School of Medicine returned to Charity with AP, this time looking toward its future.

The landmark hospital, where generations of Tulane physicians trained and cared for New Orleanians, is on the brink of a new chapter as Tulane prepares to transform the long-vacant building into a hub for medical research and innovation.

Twenty-one years ago, Hurricane Katrina changed New Orleans forever.

It is a time none of us wants to relive and one we should never forget.

When floodwaters surrounded our medical district, and hospitals lost power, physicians, residents, medical students, nurses, and staff continued to care for patients under unimaginable conditions.

They worked in the dark. They moved through flooded streets by canoe. They helped evacuate patients by helicopter. And in the days and weeks that followed, they returned to New Orleans and began the long work of restoring care to communities across the city.

Today, we remember those we lost and all whose lives were forever changed by Hurricane Katrina. And we remember the people who, in the direst of circumstances, continued to care for others.

Twenty-one years later, their stories remain part of the history of Tulane University School of Medicine and New Orleans.

🌟 Meet Wu-Min Deng, PhD! 🌟

Dr. Deng is the Gerald & Flora Jo Mansfield Piltz Endowed Professor in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a member of the Tulane Cancer Center. From childhood, he developed a curiosity for the science of living things, and eventually found a love of developmental biology.

In this episode of Tulane Med Insider, Dr. Deng shares how he enjoys working in a community of young scientists and developing therapies that could help cancer patients in the future - all using fruit flies as a model!
