Huge congratulations to Dr. Kate Adams, who was awarded the 2026 Suzanne and Stephen Weiss Presidential Fellowship for Undergraduate Education 🏆

Dr. Adams is recognized for encouraging students to think critically and across disciplines as they explore intellectual questions, instilling a sense of purpose and connecting the study of literature to the broader human experience.

Students described her as an anchor whose “unwavering commitment” provided invaluable support while challenging them to achieve their goals. One former student put it simply: “If you are looking for ‘The Teacher Who Changed My Life,’ Kate Adams fits that description without question.”

TOMORROW!

At 7pm, join us in Freeman Auditorium for the annual Ferguson Lecture: WHY POE— AND THE HUMANITIES— MATTER with Professor J. Gerald Kennedy.

This talk will offer a rapid tour of Poe’s key tales, emphasizing his uncanny foresight into our precarious modern world. Michael Capuzzo, writing for the Smithsonian in 2019, called Poe “the most influential American author ever.” That’s a big claim, yet it’s arguably true. This talk explains why Poe still speaks to us so compellingly—and how his work typifies the continuing importance of the humanities (and reading books!) in an age of AI, digital communication, and online work.

After the lecture concludes, we’ll reconvene in Woodward Way for refreshments! See you there.

Environmental Poetry in the Americas/Poesía ambiental en las Américas brings together poets Nicole Cecilia Delgado (Puerto Rico) and Eliana Hernåndez Pachón (Colombia) for a Spanish-language reading and bilingual conversation with two key Latin American voices whose work draws connections between poetry, visual arts, and environmental thought.

Through archival and documentary approaches, their writing addresses hurricanes, extractivism, and forced migration. Recent publications include Delgado’s Período especial (2019) and Islas adyacentes / Adjacent Islands (2022), and Hernández Pachón’s award-winning La mata / The Brush (2020, 2024).

Both are influential figures in independent publishing—Delgado as co-founder of La Impresora and Hernández Pachón through collaborations with presses and collectives such as Como un lugar—highlighting poetry’s power to envision new ecological relationships and collective futures.
