From hosting his own show on WIUR to taking the next steps in his career through his internships with YES Network, Landon Popovic ’27 found his voice at Iona.

At YES Network, Popovic worked as a research and production intern, contributing to broadcasts for the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets. His responsibilities included compiling statistical research, preparing matchup reports, writing shot sheets for on-air talent, and clipping highlights for social media.

A Media & Strategic Communications major with a concentration in Digital Production, Popovic discovered his calling through the doors opened and connections forged upon his arrival on campus.

“I’ve been lucky to have so many opportunities here,” Popovic said. “I feel like I was born to do this. I have learned so much from all the wonderful Iona faculty about what makes you successful in this industry.”

The Knicks made history and the Gaels helped tell the story! 🏀

More than 50 years in the making, the New York Knicks' championship run was a historic moment for New York and Iona University alumni and faculty were there to help bring it to life.

From television reporting to sports broadcasting, the Gaels brought fans inside the action at Madison Square Garden during the franchise’s first NBA title since 1973. Their work not only captured a defining chapter in Knicks history, but also reflected the preparation and opportunities that helped launch their careers to one of sports’ biggest stages.

As an Emmy Award-winning Lead Sports Anchor for NBC 4 New York and Iona University's Executive-in-Residence, Bruce Beck brings decades of sports broadcasting experience directly to our students through mentorship, guest lectures, career guidance, internship support and invaluable industry connections. During the Knicks' memorable playoff run, Bruce has had a front-row seat to one of the most exciting stories in New York sports.

“The Knicks have had a remarkable playoff run, fueled by unselfishness and selflessness. They remind me of the Knicks of the late 60’s and early 70’s, who went on to capture two NBA Championships. I have been working nonstop, round the clock for over 7 weeks — but it is an honor and privilege to cover this team and these riveting games for NBC 4 New York.”

Iona alumnus Chris Scaglione ’96 has spent decades documenting some of the biggest moments in New York sports history. This year's NBA Finals run has given him a chance to reflect on just how far the New York Knicks have come since the last time he covered them on basketball's biggest stage.

“Covering the NBA Finals has been an amazing experience. I covered the Knicks the last time they made it in 1999, and there were so many lean years in the 27 years since. But it’s been a remarkable climb back to dominance capped by the incredible 13-game postseason winning streak, leaving them just one win away from their first NBA title in 53 years!”

"Iona prepared me for this moment."

For Richard Giacovas ’13, those words carry extra meaning as he covers the New York Knicks' return to the NBA Finals for FOX 5 NY

What began with covering sports on campus grew into a career spent reporting on historic moments—including standing on the field with the New York Yankees covering the World Series.

From covering the Westchester Knicks as an Iona student to reporting on the NBA Finals for ABC7 News, Anthony Carlo ’15 has witnessed New York basketball from every angle. As a New York Emmy and Press Club award-winning journalist, Anthony reflects on how an opportunity at Iona helped launch a career that has come full circle during the New York Knicks' historic playoff run.

"As I take in the sights and sounds of what this championship run means for a die hard fan base, I remember my time as a communications student at Iona. Back then, I wasn’t at MSG, but instead at the Westchester County Center. That’s where I cut my teeth covering the Westchester Knicks — an opportunity given to me by Iona and my mentor, professor Mike Damergis whom I give great thanks to. The crowds were smaller, the press was smaller, but the fans were just as impassioned to hopefully one day see the franchise make a run like this."
