Founded by the late Professor Catherine Mapp in 1985, Iona College Dance Program offers rich experience in dance as an art form and medium of learning through its variety of course offerings and its residential dance company, ICDE(Iona College Dance Ensemble). The program provides students with opportunities to improve their dance and performance techniques, expand their perceptions of dance as an
art form, and understand its role in holistic learning throughout their time at Iona College. Students also have the opportunity to be a part of the college's dance performance group, Iona College Dance Ensemble and perform diverse classical and contemporary dance repertories choreographed and staged by the director of the company, the college's dance faculty members, guest artists, and selected mentored experienced student choreographers in a major full evening concert each semester. Interested students also have opportunities to perform at various dance venues including ACDA (American College Dance Association) and performance sites in NYC with the faculty members. The program aims to develop creative movers, critical thinkers, and leaders and to expose the college and local and global community to the beauty and power of dance as an art form, mode of education, generation of knowledge, and advocacy.
*The program also offers numerous internship and interdisciplinary learning opportunities in the form of creative and scholarly projects and independent studies that incorporate creative, teaching, and performance practices, and community leaderships among others.
