St. John Henry Newman is the patron saint of Catholic campus ministry. Born an Anglican and ordained a priest he then converted to Roman Catholicism and was ordained a Catholic priest in 1845. He joined the Congregation of the Oratory, founded by St. Philip Neri and founded Oratory houses in England. Named a Cardinal in 1879, he is honored as a popular preacher, writer, and eminent theologian in both the Roman Catholic and Anglican Churches. Beginning Hispanic Heritage Month in the middle of September is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries including, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively. Also, Día de la Raza, a celebration of the African, Spaniard, and indigenous ancestors in the New World, is celebrated on Oct. 12.
