In Between

On Saturday, May 2nd, NYU Steinhardt Dance Education presents our first-ever AAPI+ Dance Festival โ€” an evening of performance, community, and celebration featuring works by AAPI+ alumni and current students across a spectrum of movement styles and lived experiences.

Doors open at 3:30 PM with a pre-show activation โ€” an interactive living archive where you can connect with the work and the artists before the performance even begins. Then join us in the studio for an evening of dance that reflects the full range of who we are.

Tinikling is the national dance of the Philippines and the most well-known Filipino dance internationally, mimicking movements of the Tikling bird jumping through the bamboo traps farmers would put out in their rice fields to keep birds from eating all their crop. It is also said that Tinikling dance movements concealed martial arts practices among the field workers. Tinikling is danced all throughout the Philippines with various regional adaptations and is a source of cultural pride. We are grateful that Karesia Batan of and was able to lead a class for our students this week.
