It was a joy to lead the Intergenerational Design class through the Lower East Side, asking one question: what does it take to design a place where more than one generation belongs?

Some highlights from our field research:
🌿 M’Finda Kalunga Community Garden: Who gets to dig, who gets to sit, who gets to teach? How does a garden’s design make room for all of them?
🛋️ Tenement Museum: We sat in the living room of a 1950s apartment. What do objects and rooms pass down that a plaque can’t?
🏢 Seward Park from the perch of cooperative living: What do you see from above that you miss at street level, and who counts as a neighbor?
🎭 Abrons Arts Center: We saw Everyday Royalty: An Exhibition of Artists Across Henry Street Settlement, with elders portraying themselves as royalty. Who gets seen as majestic, and how can design make that visible?
💡 14th Street Y Repair class: We observed a class where participants learned to wire a lamp, using a w**e bottle as the base. What happens when repair becomes a shared skill, and when making something new from something old is a way of connecting people?
Questions we’re carrying forward: Who is a space designed for, and who is it designed with? Is intergenerational design a program, a building, or a ritual?

🌳 Do you have a tree-loving story?
Laura Nova , faculty in the Integrated Design Program, wants to hear it. She’s presenting Tree Commitment Bureau — an interspecies commitment ceremony complete with a ceremonial canopy, commitment rings, contracts, and tree fascinator hats — as part of New Dendrology, a group exhibition of eleven artists rethinking our relationship to trees.

Rouya Aldabbagh’s Senior thesis project “Becoming & Unbecoming” is both a personal archive and a love letter to her time in New York City. The work documents the fragments that map a version of herself that could only exist within that time and place.

Rouya Aldabbagh (@) is a mixed media artist whose practice combines design, storytelling and community-based research. Her work focuses on user experience, often centering overlooked narratives. Through digital media and tactile objects, she translates primary research into intentional visual and sensory forms.

Michael Armellino’s Senior thesis project “The Final Cut” creates a cohesive space that represents my childhood comforts by blending memories of furniture, lighting, music, and spaces that evokes the safety and softness he felt growing up as the son of a woodworker. Each object and piece of furniture is handcrafted out of natural materials including wood and leather to pull me back into these memories through tangible, tactile surfaces and textures.

Michael Armellino ( ) is a furniture designer based in New York City working with reclaimed wood and other materials, creating spatial experiences that incorporate elements of scent, sound and touch. His designs work to create a feeling of comfort within spaces.
