Don't miss Thomas Mellins and Donald Albrecht, curators of Art + Furniture, as they interview architect Dennis Miller, author of the accompanying book, Art + Furniture: An Oral History of the American Furniture Movement, published by Abbeville Press!

An outgrowth of an oral history project at the New York School of Interior Design Archives conceived by Miller, the book chronicles the American furniture movement through the words of its protagonists, complemented by contemporary and archival photography. The evening will conclude with a book signing, and copies will be available for purchase.

💡 Congratulations to NYSID alum Fiona Grunwald '26 (MPSL) on her recent article for Women in Lighting + Design!

Fiona reflects on her path into lighting design and shares her experiences with two different lighting education programs, including NYSID’s MPS in Lighting Design. She discusses how the programs expanded her knowledge and helped strengthen her approach to lighting design.

She said, “More than anything, (NYSID’s MPSL) program taught me to treat lighting as a discipline that shapes how a space functions and feels, belonging in the conversation from the first sketch.”

🛋️ We’re celebrating Art + Furniture: Designers, Makers, and Advocates by spotlighting the incredible designers featured in the exhibition.

This week we are highlighting Dakota Jackson and Wendell Castle!

🪄 Dakota Jackson brought his background in magic into his furniture design. His first furniture commission—a desk with secret compartments—was created for John Lennon in 1974. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and Cooper Hewitt.

🪑 Wendell Castle challenged traditional ideas of furniture with bold, organic forms and exceptional craftsmanship. A pioneer of the American studio furniture movement, his work is included in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

🌇 Congratulations to NYSID faculty member Stefanie Werner on her recent exhibition, Interface New York – When Street Art Meets Street Photography, at Cafe Emotion in Germany!

The exhibition brings together Stefanie’s New York City street photography with stencil art by Cutwork Orange / Daniel Gjoka. Together, their work explores the architecture, people, and everyday details of New York City from two distinct perspectives, showing how street photography and street art can inspire each other.

The NYSID community mourns the passing of Peter B. Brandt, an accomplished architect, interior designer, and longtime faculty member, who died on September 26.

"For a quarter of a century, Peter Brandt was an integral part of the NYSID community. Through his dedication to teaching, generosity in sharing his knowledge, and commitment to the next generation of designers, he helped shape both our students’ education and the character of NYSID,” says NYSID President David Sprouls. “His influence will endure, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.”

A Celebration of Life honoring Peter will be held on October 30 at 11:30 a.m. at NYSID. Friends, colleagues, and family members will gather to share memories and celebrate his life.
